MASK PRESS RELEASE

From:  Michelle Cardini (michelle@maskmatters.org)

Date: October 31, 2013

MORE THAN 40% OF ALL TEENS WITH INTERNET ACCESS HAVE REPORTED BEING BULLIED ONLINE*

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - On October 18th, MASK Director of Education Pam Baumann conducted a presentation on Cyberbullying and Cybersafety to Sandpiper Elementary School as part of its COMETS program which promotes anti-bullying, and putting an end to teasing and harassment. The age-appropriate presentation to the sixth grade students covered information about how to stay safe while online and what to do if they experience online bullying.

"Bullies are no longer just the mean person on the school playground," said Baumann. "It is important for children -- especially the younger ones -- to understand that bullying often occurs online, while in the privacy of their own homes."

Approximately 125 students attended the presentation, which included information about some of the dangers that can arise through technology. The students learned strategies and tools on how to navigate through a world of being connected 24/7.

"The sixth grade students were kept engaged, and your information is always up to date," said Joyce King, Sandpiper Elementary School nurse. "The students felt comfortable asking questions and sharing information with you. We are looking forward to your future parent presentation and student assembly in the spring."
