Behind the Label - International Friendship Day

Jock. Emo. Prep. Hipster. Nerd. These are all labels comprised of a multitude of stereotypes hurled at us by our peers. But these simple terms don't even touch the depth of a single individual. In fact, they just provide us with a stereotypical outline of a flat character - static and uncomplicated; not a developed, interesting human being.

With this in mind, it is imperative that both students and adults are careful about everything they say. An unintentionally mean joke can stay with a person, their brain trying to analyze and understand it while they become more and more emotional. Some people can brush away these jeers without a second thought, but for others, that's simply impossible, resulting in detrimental emotions and consequences.

Educate.
Tips.

Bully: Role play. Kids should be able to recognize when someone is trying to bully them into drinking. Tell them that you can always be their excuse to say no.

Safety: When discussing water safety with your kids, remind them to always swim with a buddy and to be aware of their surroundings. When watching children swim, adults should avoid distractions like talking on the phone or texting, inexperienced swimmers should wear a floating device, while staying close to the edges or in the shallow end of the pool.
