One of the Quickest Ways to Shut Down Communication is to Respond with Anger, Drama or Strong Emotion
SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Do you ever find yourself wondering: "Who are you, and what have you done with my sweet, compliant child?" The newest issue of MASK The Magazine, The Communication Issue: Build and Strengthen a Foundation of Healthy Communication With Your Child, examines the many ways parents can strengthen communication with their child, and learn the most effective ways to maintain healthy communication with your kids at every age.
According to Lucie Hemmen, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and author, "As kids move into adolescence, communication becomes even more critical as they face bigger challenges with their peers." Hemmen suggests asking questions "with a gentle, neutral energy" and becoming a nonjudgmental listener.
"Lost in Translation" in the S.A.T. section will tell you if you have fallen victim to the age-old problem of "Said vs. Heard": what we say, versus what they hear. Readers will also learn the basic premise of the "Love & Logic" parenting approach, which focuses on setting limits in a loving way, and giving the "problem" back to the child using choices and natural consequences.
Also in the Summer issue, NFL superstar Larry Fitzgerald is MASK's "Dad Dialed In," and discusses how he leads by example and what it means to be a role model for kids. "Minute with Mom" contributor and CBS News 5 Anchor Catherine Anaya shares how she works to keep the lines of communication open between herself and her two children, and how she has made adjustments to her busy schedule in order to keep her kids at the top of her priority list.
From five ways to keep your college-bound teen safe, to MASK's quarterly need-to-know tips on safety, drugs, technology, and bullying, this issue of MASK The Magazine offers practical advice on how to build and strengthen a foundation of healthy communication with your child. The summer issue is currently available at maskmatters.org and at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, Arizona.
The award-winning MASK The Magazine tackles important subjects including bullying, current drug and alcohol trends, self-esteem, and technology safety. All topics are formatted in easy-to-read, age appropriate sections, from kindergarten to college. Through compelling stories, expert information, and resourceful tips and suggestions, each issue highlights some of the challenges facing children and families today.
MASK The Magazine serves as a reinforcement tool and resource for MASK awareness and prevention presentations.
