Mental Health Awareness Month - Depression

  

A young girl in her mid-teens stares at a mirror, a wounded look in her eyes as she dissects the reflection looking back at her. With the precision of a surgeon, she examines her appearance and pictures the parts of her body she would change if given the opportunity.

 

Even though physically she is isolated in her room, she still bears the pressures of the outside world and the opinions of others on her shoulders. She glances at the poster of her favorite celebrity, muttering, "Why can't I look like her?"


To the untrained eye, most high school students appear to be quite happy. On school campuses all across the country, sound pollution rises up, caused by the laughter, jokes and banter of the kids. The underlying truth is that some of these seemingly jubilant teens may actually be suffering from emotional and psychological distress. The pressures of an average teen's social life are enough to cause him or her to turn to alternative forms of coping. One of the most prominent and common coping mechanisms for teens in middle and high school is "cutting."

Bully: Take a moment to recognize your inner bully. Hold yourself accountable for your actions, which may undermine another person or even your own children. Watch what you say and do. Bullies are everywhere, but if you take the time to empathize with others, you can eliminate the bully in yourself. 

 

Safety: Self-harm can include a variety of acts against oneself that are harmful, that may include cutting, pulling out hair, and swallowing harmful objects. As a parent, be aware of these actions and when you notice something out of the ordinary talk with your child and help them to communicate their feelings.
