April 20 - 'Weed Day' - What You Need to Know

What is 4/20 you ask? April 20th at 4:20PM of nearly every year is the celebration of a subculture known as "cannabis culture." During this celebration, a fair amount of cannabis is consumed, either recreationally or to advocate for the legalization of marijuana use. The origins of this counterculture can be dated as far back as 1971 in San Rafael, California. It is in San Rafael where a group of individuals known as "Waldos" planned to search for an abandoned cannabis crop that they had learned about; the project was simply known as "4:20 Louis." Before embarking on their adventure, the Waldos chose their meeting place and set the time for 4:20PM, thus April 20th at 4:20PM becoming forever socially known and accepted as "pot day," "cannabis day," etc.

This day has been solidified within this subculture, and it has provided teenagers and others with a way of identifying with a group or day and a sense of belonging or togetherness.

However, even with this subculture so publicly advocating for the legalization of marijuana, many states continue to choose to uphold the legal ban, often citing health, societal, and governmental concerns. Due to the legal implications of pot consumption, drug "chemists" have concocted an arguably more dangerous drug in the process: Spice. Made from a mixture of herbals and synthetics, Spice is a legal alternative to marijuana. And while there is a common misconception about Spice being "natural" instead of harmful, the drug differs from marijuana because the chemicals in it are unknown. Due to the many different, sometimes new, drugs contained in Spice, it is able to bypass the legal definition of marijuana, but give relatively the same or worse effects.

Tips.

Drug: According to a study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, kids who regularly eat dinner with their families are three and a half times less likely to try drugs and one and half times less likely to try alcohol. Set a goal to have at least two family dinners a week and build from there. Eating out at a restaurant counts, too!

Tech: Did you know that your children don't need a cell phone in order to communicate with others? All they need is a Wi-Fi compatible device, such as an iPod Touch or Zune, and popular messaging application 'Kik Messenger.' Through Kik, they can create a user profile and begin communicating with friends or strangers around the world! Users may also send photos, sketches, voice messages, and a wide variety of other sharable content that expands with every update.
The best defense is knowing about the devices your children are using, know their applications and its limits, set the settings on these devices to limit content they buy/download, and constantly check their devices. Also, be sure to let your children know that it's not an issue of privacy, but a concern for their safety -- you trust them, but you don't trust others with possible malicious intent.
