MASK PRESS RELEASE

From:  Michelle Cardini (michelle@maskmatters.org)

Date:  November 14, 2012

NEXT TO MARIJUANA, PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS ARE THE MOST COMMON ILLEGAL DRUGS TEENS ARE
USING TO GET HIGH. MASK EDUCATES DESERT TRAILS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS ON THE DANGERS
OF PRESCRIPTION DRUG MISUSE AND INHALANTS.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - In late October, MASK (Mothers Awareness on School-age Kids) had an opportunity to
engage, educate and empower kindergarten through 6th grade students at Desert Trails Elementary School in
Phoenix on the dangers of prescription drugs misuse and inhalants. The MASK breakout sessions were part
of Desert Trails Red Ribbon week event. Students were educated at an age-appropriate level to help them
identify and understand inhalants and prescription drug misuse. Students learned that "sudden sniffing
death" is when a person's heart rate increases so erratically that it results in cardiac arrest and death. It can
happen the very first time and inhalant is used or the 100th time. Students were informed on what to do if a
child accidentally took a pill or too much of a medication on accident as wells as strategies to use if someone
approached them offering inhalants or prescription drugs.

"All the students left the presentation knowing something they did not know before," said Jacob Zellmann,
Social Media Manager of MASK. "students were equipped with tools and strategies to handle unexpected
exposures to inhalants or drugs. MASK's presentations combined with all the other organizations amazing
presentations gave the students a lot of pertinent information which will have long-term benefits."

MASK The Magazine serves as a reinforcement tool and resource for MASK presentations. All schools or
organizations hosting MASK presentations are offered a school-wide MASK The Magazine fundraiser. Each
student is given one complimentary issue of MASK The Magazine and for every $24 subscription received the
school will receive $10. Register your school or organization today by contacting fundraising@maskmatters.org

 or call
480-502-5337.
