Highlight-HER
Sharon McCorkle
There are some people who, it seems, are put on this earth to help others. Sharon McCorkle is just one of those people.
Born in Athens, GA., McCorkle showed at an early age a tremendous amount of compassion for others. She always made sure that no one felt left out at school or neighborhood gatherings.
After moving to Maryland as a child, McCorkle won the hearts of many people in the community with her intelligence, kindness beauty, singing talent, community service and personality. She earned her bachelor's degree in music education, and won numerous awards, honors and recognitions. After college, McCorkle married her husband Gary and went on to become a secondary school teacher, coach and administrator.
In 1980, McCorkle founded the Rainbow Christian Family Day Care, where her mission was to nurture and educate children from toddlers to pre-teens in an environment of love and individualized instruction. Her program efforts attracted media attention and she was appointed to serve on the advisory board of the State Superintendent of the Maryland State Department of Education for early childhood education.
McCorkle's Motto: "All children can learn."

As an organization, MASK (Mothers Awareness on School-age Kids) recognizes that there are many mothers in our community who are not only making a difference in their own families and the lives of those they love, but also in the communities in which they live and work. As mothers, we understand that the demands of motherhood often make it difficult for us to pursue our passion for helping others. It was in this spirit that we created the first annual MASK "Moms Making a Difference" Unity Award, which honors inspiring women who are these kinds of change-makers. The members of the Unity Community are positively affecting the lives of children and families every day. They will have the opportunity to collaboratively share their insights on promoting positive change at quarterly meetings. MASK (Mothers Awareness on School-age Kids) is a 501(c)(3) organization created in 2007 by a group of dedicated mothers who recognized the need to consistently educate families on rapidly changing issues. MASK's mission is to educate both parents and children about the issues facing our youth and to empower children to make safe, healthy choices.
MASK addresses a wide range of important topics, from drugs and alcohol to bullying and Internet safety. With no family being immune from these issues, MASK believes that the key is to educate both parents and children, so when issues do arise, they will be prepared and equipped to deal with them. MASK is dedicated to bringing awareness programs, free of charge, to our communities, large and small. It is through magazine advertisers and subscribers, fundraising events and donations that MASK is able to continue providing all of our programs free of charge to schools and communities.
