The Standards Collection Team Adds to International Offerings

November was a big month in capturing new documents. We captured international standards including Hong Kong (Curriculum Guide document in Mathematics, Science and English Language Education), India (Syllabus document in English, Mathematics and Science), South Africa, a portion of the UK, and New South Wales. In addition, we have completed reviews of Australia (9 documents representing the regions), Canada (Territories and Provinces) and Singapore. On the national front, we have also added and reviewed Florida CTEs and Health (draft) as well as NWEA documents.
Other new standards include:
Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards (IELDS) - Multiple
Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) - Arts
Tennessee Curriculum Standards - Social Studies

2012 Programme for International Student Assessment Results Released
The recently released 2012 scores of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) administered by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) shows the United States falling in the middle of the list of developed nations on subjects including Math, Science and Reading). Administered every 3 years to 15 year olds, this test used students in Connecticut, Florida and Massachusetts as benchmarks against other countries. The US scored lower than the OECD average in math and fell about even with the average on Science and Reading. Shanghai, China scored the highest of any represented area on all three subjects. Some sources view the US's overall low scores as a disheartening look at the educational system and some are looking to Common Core State Standards as evidence that the US is moving in a better direction.
