Next Generation Science Standards
The Next Generation Science Standards were released on April 9, 2013. Academic Benchmarks has already begun the process of capturing the 'Performance Expectations' of the NGSS and expect to have those available for purchase within the next two weeks. If you would like to pre-order these standards, please contact AB Client Support. There will be an annual fee of $500 to license these standards.
Based on our initial review of the NGSS, the standards have multiple components. In our experience, some or all of these components may be of interest to the clients of Academic Benchmarks. To help most effectively meet your needs, we invite your suggestions on how you would like the NGSS delivered. Please contact AB Client Support with any suggestions.
Additional portions of the NGSS, according to the documents published, are not scheduled to be released until April 26. Academic Benchmarks will continue to monitor and determine the best way for representing all portions in the best way possible for our clients.

NGSS Highlights
Over the past several months, AB has attended webinars and conferences related to the NGSS standards. We offer some of the following key highlights of NGSS as a primer:
- The initiative has been completely state-directed, funded by the Carnegie Corporation, and coordinated by Achieve.
- 26 states contributed to the development of the standards, which are based on the Framework for K-12 Science Education, and have agreed to consider adopting the NGSS.
- States will soon begin their own formal adoption processes followed by an implementation phase, as appropriate.
- NGSS seeks to improve science education by helping students gain a deeper understanding and application of the science content.
- The standards possess a focus on the 'how' and 'why' in addition to the "what' of science.
- The standards intend to offer a coherence of science concepts within a grade and across K-12.
- The incorporation of engineering into the science standards is largely new and is intended to reflect what happens in industry.
Academic Benchmarks will continue to follow NGSS developments. Continue to read more in our regular Client Snapshots, follow us on Twitter, and visit the CommonCorner.
