Laserfiche Empower 2016 Announced
 

The Empower 2016 Conference will be held on January 11-14, 2016, at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center.

Laserfiche Tip & Trick:
  
OCR Speed and Accuracy

 

When performing OCR (Optical Character Recognition) in the Laserfiche product suite, you can choose from several settings for speed or accuracy. This allows you to select the option that best suits the documents you are working with.

 

Speed: Reduces the amount of time it takes to perform OCR. Generated text may be less accurate. You may want to choose this option if the image you are OCRing is clear and sharp, and you are OCRing large batches of documents.

 

Balance/Standard: Neither optimum speed nor optimum accuracy, but between the two. This is the best choice for most people. Choose balance if you aren't sure which option to choose.

 

Accuracy: Helps perform OCR on images that have low accuracy with the other settings. Processing time will also be increased. You may want to choose this option if the image you are OCRing is fuzzy or unclear, or if you are getting poor OCR results from one of the other options.

Another control that you have for OCRing documents is found under Tools/Options in LF Client, which relates to the format of the typewritten text.  The setting is "Decolumnize text"



With a table/spreadsheet format document you want to keep each row together across the whole page, despite the large spaces between columns of information; with something like a newspaper, you want the OCR engine to remain within the column format to keep the article's content together, instead of crossing the space into the next article.  Decolumnize allows you to manage this action.  Give us a call if you have questions on how to configure the settings to meet your needs.

The clearer the text on your documents, the more accurate the OCR is likely to be. Therefore, you may be able to use a faster OCR setting for documents with a high image quality and still get accurate results. Also, the fuzzy search setting in the Laserfiche Client can help you find documents even if the OCR is not 100% accurate. You can test the various settings on your documents and determine which works best for your purposes.
