Empowering Synergy's Parents
Parents Attend Patriotic Assembly & Back to School Nights
On September 10th, Synergy's elementary students performed a variety of songs to honor and celebrate America at their annual Patriotic Assembly. Over 200 parents attended the student performance and Back to School event that followed. Synergy's middle and high schools also hosted Back to School Nights in August and September where parents visited classrooms and got to meet each of their child's teachers.

Synergy's Parent Empowerment Program

"As a parent or guardian, your involvement in your child's education is the most important factor in your child's success in school."

This quote is the inspiration for Synergy's new Parent Empowerment Program. Synergy is hosting a series of parent workshops, held twice a month at different Synergy campuses. Workshop topics include "Parents as First Teachers," "Helping Your Child Become More Responsible," and "Connecting via the Online Parent Portal." The goal of the program is to empower parents to become active participants in their children's education. Synergy's Parent Empowerment Program was developed by the Assistant Directors of Student & Family Services at each school, who like most of Synergy's students, were first-generation children themselves.

Katy Aquino
Assistant Director of Student & Family Services at Synergy Charter Academy
Katy has been with Synergy since the very beginning when she attended an informational meeting for prospective parents. Katy was a founding parent of Synergy Charter Academy in 2004, and also joined Synergy that first year as the Office Manager. Eleven years later, Katy is the Assistant Director of Student & Family Services at Synergy's elementary school. All three of her children attended Synergy Charter Academy and currently attend Synergy's middle and high schools. Her oldest daughter is graduating this Spring with the Synergy Class of 2015 and applying to colleges throughout California and on the East Coast.

Sandy Andrade

Assistant Director of Student & Family Services at Synergy Kinetic Academy

Sandy joined Synergy Kinetic Academy in 2010 and is the school's Assistant Director of Student & Family Services. Sandy was integral in Synergy's "Public School Choice" process for both Synergy Kinetic Academy and Synergy Quantum Academy. She organized parents to canvass their neighborhoods and gain community support for Synergy's schools to be co-located on the Los Angeles Unified School District campuses they currently share with their LAUSD partner schools. Sandy is passionate about helping Synergy's parents realize the power they have to create a better future for their children.

Reina Morales

Assistant Director of Student & Family Services at Synergy Quantum Academy

Reina was a founding staff member of Synergy Kinetic Academy in 2008 and Synergy Quantum Academy in 2011. Over the years, she has held several roles working with school operations and supporting Synergy's students and families. In 2012, she lead the first Students Run LA team at Synergy Quantum Academy, which also included students from the traditional LAUSD schools that are co-located with Synergy on the Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School campus. Reina finds the one-on-one conversations she has with students and parents to be the most fulfilling aspect of her job.
