Synergy Wins Audience Award at the UCLA Social Enterprise Showcase

Synergy was one of 10 non-profit organizations that participated in UCLA's Social Enterprise Academy this year. The 6-month academy paired non-profit leaders with a team of undergraduate students in UCLA's Economics Department. Each team worked to create a business plan for a new social enterprise venture. Synergy's team developed a plan for a school consulting service.

At the final event on June 6th, Synergy won the Audience Favorite Award for the 2-minute fast pitch delivered by Synergy CEO Dr. Meg Palisoc. Congratulations to Synergy's team -- Dr. Meg Palisoc, Jennifer Epps, Rhonda Deomampo, and UCLA students Christal Chung, Lee Dorsey-Tyler, Monte Flagg, and Lauren Schwartz! Watch Meg's award-winning pitch here (go to 1:14:40).

Dr. Meg Palisoc was named one of four Education Reformers to Watch in the country by the Walton Family Foundation. Meg was also selected to participate in the prestigious Pahara Institute as a Summer 2014 Pahara-Aspen Education Fellow. Meg has been leading Synergy for the past 10 years, and she and her team have plans to transform the education landscape by sharing their best practices with other schools nationwide.

Synergy Graduates to Attend Top Colleges this Fall

All three Synergy schools celebrated another successful school year. In particular, Synergy Quantum Academy celebrated its second group of graduating seniors. Synergy is proud that many of its seniors will be attending the following colleges:

UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, USC, Cal State LA, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Mount St. Mary's, and University of La Verne.

Synergy is also honored that its dedicated founders donated college scholarships to Synergy's graduating seniors. Lisbette A., who will be studying engineering at UC Berkeley this fall, won $400 from the Shannon STEM Scholarship, donated by Synergy Co-Founder Dr. Barbara Shannon and her husband, David Shannon. Bryant V. and Emily R., who will both attend UCLA, won $1000 each from the Angela Hou Lin Memorial Scholarship fund that was created by the family of Synergy Co-Founder Dr. Meg Palisoc in memory of her mother who passed away in 2012. Synergy Partners with Downtown LA Business Leaders

Synergy Quantum Academy partners with two prestigious companies: Mercer and Boston Consulting Group. For three years, Mercer's downtown LA office hosted their annual Volunteer Day at Synergy's high school. This year, Mercer LA staff led a competition with Synergy's junior class that focused on ways students could improve a specific need in their community. The winning team won gift cards. Mercer has also raised funds for field trips to local colleges and for college scholarships for Synergy's graduating seniors.

This year, Synergy's high school was one of the first schools in the country to participate in the Boston Consulting Group's Business@Schools program. Synergy's students worked with BCG mentors to analyze existing companies, provide consulting services to local businesses, and create their own start-up companies. In addition to the volunteers from BCG, Synergy thanks its dedicated teachers for helping to oversee this program: Alyssa Benavidez, Matthew Duncan, Sarah Durston, and Drew Karimlou. Synergy also thanks its board members, Kevin Cox, Brian Holman, and Eric Medina for serving as judges for BCG's Business@Schools competitions.
