Letter from the Executive Director: Use Other Run Wild Missoula Members to Stay Motivated | by Eva Dunn-Froebig, RWM Executive Director
Happy February!
Last month I told you about the changes within Run Wild Missoula at the start of the New Year. We want to keep moving forward and keep improving as an organization. I strive to make positive changes in my life, too. I want a healthy balance of work, family and time for myself. In 2014, I want to get outside and exercise more, whether it's running, riding my bike, hiking, walking, Nordic and Alpine skiing and ice skating. When I'm active I feel better physically, mentally and emotionally.
We want you to get out there, too. Run Wild Missoula's signature event, the Missoula Marathon, serves as a tool to get us out there. Read more here about how to get motivated to get out there and have a great time!

Thank You for Taking RWM's Membership Survey |
Run Wild Missoula recently sent out an email to all members asking you to complete our annual survey. The results of the survey are important to us and help us make decisions about our membership program and our organization.
We will choose two members who have filled out the survey to receive a Run Wild Missoula long sleeve technical shirt. Thank you for your time!

View From The Back: BOP Buddies
|
by Pam Gardiner, RWM Leader of the Back
The Run Wild Missoula mission promotes and supports runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. We at the BOP are grateful to belong to a club with open, pace-neutral arms. We are also pleased that RWM is continually working to make its events more welcoming to slower runners and walkers. The club is sincere in moving its mission beyond lip service into reality. In pursuit of that goal, we recently decided to experiment with the role of BOP Buddy to support RWM Race Directors with developing and staffing BOP-friendly practices. Read more here about BOP Buddies and how you can help out!

5th Annual Run for the Luck of It! 5K/7-Miler/Kid's Run: Saturday, March 15th
|
by Jen von Sehlen, Race Director
It's February and it's time decide which races you'd like do this spring. At the top o' the list should be this classic, festive race with a twist! Registration is open, so what are you waiting for?! Again, participants have two race distances from which to choose. As in years past, both races will start and finish in downtown Missoula on Pine Street in front of Sean Kelly's; runners, walkers, skippers, joggers will make their way through the West- and North-side neighborhoods before winding back to the start via the North-side pedestrian bridge. And for our young lads and lassies, the kids' dash is back and free as always. Click here to read more about all that will be happening at the race - bag pipers, loads of food, prizes, free blinkies to first 300 registered, The Missoula Irish Dancers, and more. This is one fun run!

Courage to Start: Nathan Howard
|
by Gwen Florio, RWM Member

It's generally accepted that some of the best stories from any marathon can be found as those in the back of the pack cross the finish line. There you find people who've battled illness, injuries, weight, and every personal demon you can imagine. Their successful finishes are rightfully celebrated. Run Wild Missoula thinks something else should be celebrated, too: The gutsiness it took those people to start - to take that first step, as slow-running advocate John "The Penguin" Bingham notes in his book, "The Courage to Start." Each month, Run Wild members nominate runners they find particularly inspirational when it comes to that sort of courage. Nominees are interviewed about why they started - and why they keep running. We think you'll find their answers as uplifting as we do. This month's nominee is Nathan Howard, 46, of Missoula. Click here to read about Nathan and his accomplishments due to his courage to start.

Easing into a Training Regimen
|
by Kristi Moore, MSPT, Alpine Physical Therapy

It is the time of year when runners begin to look at the upcoming race season and decide what races they will participate in for the year. For many it will be setting a goal for a longer distance race, for others it will be just to finish their first 5K race.
Whether you are just beginning to run or are a seasoned runner it is important to plan enough ahead of time to train appropriately for the races you are planning to do. Read more here for valuable insights from Alpine Physical Therapy on how to prevent injury as you enter your training season.
