Season's Greetings to you on behalf of our entire Human Resources team! This month's issue of Thrive is focused on UK-employee exclusive offerings designed to help you thrive during the holiday season and in the new year ahead.
  • The winter session of the Reduced Seasonal Hours Program begins December 29th - visit the Office of Work-Life site to learn more about this voluntary, flexible work arrangement.
  • UK's own Biggest Blue Loser competition returns - If you know losing weight will be among your New Year's resolutions, why not take advantage of some incredible prize incentives and free support from our team of registered dietitians and wellness pros?
  • The annual Heart, Sole & Glove 5K is a run/walk organized by UK Health & Wellness, which is open to the entire Lexington community - so please invite your friends and family. If you'd like to become more active, this is a great 5K for first-timers. Be sure to check out the Couch to 5K group.

reduced2014 Reduced Seasonal Hours

UK is once again offering the voluntary Reduced Seasonal Hour Program in an effort to provide employees with flexibility and the University with potential cost savings. This program allows eligible employees to apply for and work a temporarily reduced seasonal schedule with department approval. The upcoming Winter Reduced Hours take place December 29, 2013 through February 8, 2014; Summer hours take place May 4, 2014 through August 23, 2014. 2013 Performance Evaluations Now Available Online for Main Campus Employees

Main campus employees' PEs for calendar year 2013 are now available for completion through myUK Employee Self-Service. Please note: The deadline for completion of 2013 PEs is Friday, February 28, 2014. Training is scheduled throughout January and February for employees to learn more about using the PE system. Register for training, review videos and guides on the Performance Matters website.

Upcoming Heart, Sole & Glove 5K Inspires "Couch to 5K" Group for New Runners/Walkers
Interested in going from your couch to a 5K in just a few weeks? The new six-week Couch to 5K program is available to all UK employees, retirees and spouses. The Couch to 5K group will meet from early January through mid-February and will be training to complete the Heart, Sole & Glove 5K Run/Walk, which takes place February 15! If your schedule is not conducive to meeting in person, you can still participate! An online training program will be sent to everyone in the couch to 5K group. Please email

The Heart, Sole & Glove Run/Walk is an annual family-friendly 5K open to the entire Lexington-area community and hosted every February by University of Kentucky Health & Wellness. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join the 5K on February 15, 2014. 


New features for this year's route at Coldstream Park/Legacy Trail include:

  • Completely on the paved trail
  • Closed to traffic
  • Aid station at half-way point
  • Restrooms located at Coldstream Trailhead 

A portion of proceeds from this event will benefit Kentucky Homeplace. Also, all participants receive on race day a FREE pair of gloves featuring the race logo! Register for the 5K here


bblRegistration open for 2014 Biggest Blue Loser
Are you the next Biggest Blue Loser? This annual 10-week competition is open to new or current Weight Loss Matters participants who are ready to push themselves to the next level. Last year's Biggest Blue Loser finishers, on average, lost about 10 pounds or 5 percent of their body weight during the 2012-2013 competition. Register by January 8
