Your But! 

How many times have you heard these words come out of your mouth "I would but...?" The word "but" has gotten in the way of so many people achieving life-long goals, pushing past difficulties, pain and despair. The size of your "but" will determine if you stand still in your life or move forward. The bigger your "but" the more difficult it is to overcome the challenges in your life.  

A close "cousin" to but is "if only." If only I was born into a family who had money, if only I wasn't raised in this neighborhood, if only I would have tried harder in school, if only if only if only. But and If Only are some of the biggest hindrances to people realizing their very best. "But" and "If Only" are excuses. The dictionary definition of "excuse" is "to make allowance for a short-coming; to overlook; to serve as justification for; to vindicate." (Webster's 1828)

Henry Ward Beecher said, "Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anyone else expects of you.  Never excuse yourself." When people make allowances for their current short-comings then they build a wall that is so high and so wide they cannot overcome it. This is not for you!

Musicians Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles could have used "but" and "if only" in their lives. In spite of their blindness they still chose to chase their dreams and today we enjoy the results of their tenacity. There have been some famous people who have pushed past learning disabilities. Some include Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, Sylvester Stallone, Cher, Tom Cruise, Mozart and Robin Williams. Their "but" and their "if only" did not stand in their way!

Where does that leave you? What have you put off because of your "but" and "If only?" What decisions have been postponed because of the two "cousins (but and if only)?" You stand at the edge of an outstanding future. Instead of using "but" and "If only" use the word REGARDLESS!! The word means "in spite of everything." In spite of everything going on in your life and has gone on you are an OVERCOMER!! In spite of your disappointments you will succeed. In spite of the people who say you won't make you will exceed all expectations. In spite of your regrets you will continue to push ahead!

Kick the butt of "but" in your life and move forward REGARDLESS!
