Dear Parents and Community Members,
Thanks to the generosity of our PTO, 5th and 6th grade students got the opportunity to improve their writing skills with author Felix Rodriguez last Friday. The JMS Literacy Club created a schedule for students to meet with Mr. Rodriguez in small groups. Club members set each student up with a nameplate and a bottle of water. They sat around the dining room table in the faculty room, sharing their writing and receiving advice from Mr. Rodriguez. One area of focus was using a sentence opener called an "AAAWWUBBIS". You may have heard your child mention this at home. An AAAWWUBBIS phrase is a dependent clause that starts with although, after, as, when, while, unless, before, because, if, or since, and it's followed by a comma. While discussing their writing, students listened as Mr. Rodriguez read samples from his book, and they got to ask questions about his experiences as an author. Mr. Rodriguez will be returning to JMS to meet with more students on January 17.
I hope you enjoy your weekend.
