September 6, 2015: "No Job No Food"
Meredith Guest with Nani Ranken, Worship Associate

In his brilliant little book Ishmael, Daniel Quinn makes the astute observation that every culture has a Story. Anyone with the temerity to contradict, challenge, or defy this Story is subject to a very effective punishment, albeit one you might not expect or even notice. Continuing the theme of Labor Day, let's take a look at what this punishment is, how it has played out in the life of someone who has defied the Story, and what we might do in response.

Meredith Guest lives in Sonoma County with her partner and a bunch of rescued animals on what has become a small wildlife preserve. She substitute teaches in various schools in Petaluma and is active in trying to create habitat for Monarch butterflies. Long ago and far away she was a Southern Baptist minister who got fired and became a Montessori educator. Eventually, she came out as transgender and for several years thereafter was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Petaluma (UUP) where she still attends. She has two grown and quite wonderful children.

Minister's Musings
Another Summer has passed and it seems like just yesterday when I was getting ready to head off to Portland and General Assembly. Lisa and I had packed our bags and said goodbye to our dogs which we left in the care of our granddaughter Violet Sky, who has come of age to take on such a job - as long as Dad's willing to drive her from Sebastopol to Petaluma. Which he was.

Portland was hot when we arrived, in the 90's, a record heat wave. Though it was nice in our air conditioned room, it did bring on a cold. Still Lisa and I managed to see many of our old friends and members from my Yakima and Port Angeles churches as well as 6 or 8 members of UUCM. We went to all the UU Ministers Association programming and business meetings which were early in the week, then did the same with General Assembly which started in the middle of the week.

When we got back home from GA our dogs were ready and waiting at the door. If you are a dog person you know how nice that is for both the people and the dogs. By then Freedom School had already started so on the third morning after we returned Lisa and I headed down to Marin City to fulfill our commitments through July. It was a good experience, and a first hand reality check on the depth and seriousness of issues around education in this marginalized community. It was particularly helpful in comprehending the achievement gap in Marin and understanding just who gets crippled by it.

In August we finally got some time off to spend at our place in Mendocino. I finally had some time to work on my newest book, polish up some songs that I've been working on and read some of the newest archeological mags and other science reading I like to do. Lisa worked in the yard planting huckleberries and blueberries while keeping the 16 new Coastal Redwoods we planted, well watered.

And now the new Church year is about to start..... hard to believe it's our seventh year together, with such good energy and potential, so much possibility ahead!

So don't forget to bring your water, stones and other symbols for our altar on ingathering Sunday the 13th. Our church year and Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) both begin that Sunday! How auspicious to have our annual opening fall on the same days as the High Holy Days - Mazel Tov!

Rev Chip

Chip will return to regular office hours on September 8th.

The UUCM book club is meeting September 16 in the Clara Barton Room at 7:30.  We will discuss a Smithsonian Magazine article from October 2012, "The Dark Side of Thomas Jefferson".  If you would like to read it email Sher Sheldon shershel@comcast.net for a link. We are also going to have an experimental book selection for the coming year.  Please bring two or three suggestions of books and your calendars so we'll have choices for the year.  We will offer tea and cookies. Please join us for our scintillating discussions.
Touch of Beauty
We still need volunteers for the fall! You can sign up for one Sunday beginning September 6. On your day, bring a vase of flowers, a favorite plant, or any other beautiful, meaningful object to place on the dais up front. At the end of the service, take it home and enjoy it all week!

Here are the open dates: Sept 6, 13, 27; October (all); November 8, 15, 22. Best to send 1st and 2nd choice.

Thanks!
Sally

Here comes another season of Remarkable People!  This is the first alert so you can put this on your calendar.

On Friday, September 18, we will gather in the Fireside Room at 7:30 to hear of the interesting life and times of our own Lisa Wiggins and June Fesler.

Come for a comfortable, convivial evening hearing about the adventures of these everyday amazing people among us.

Sponsored by the Adult Education Committee. (We encourage carpooling when possible for environmental reasons and Friday's busy parking lot.)
Basket Share Program
basket share
UUCM's Basket Share Program, a project of our Social Justice Committee, is one of many connections to our community. Several Sundays per year, we share our offering basket with another nonprofit organization that provides essential community services. Most recipients serve the Bay Area and are ones UUCM members and friends are directly involved with. This means that our collective Basket Share dollars make a big difference right here in our local community.

To submit a nonprofit candidate that you truly care about, contact socialjustice@uumarin.org.

UU Kayak Trip Saturday October 3, 2-4 pm!
brown_kayak.jpg
Would you like to spend part of a sunny Saturday afternoon in a kayak watching wildlife?

The proposed trip will leave 101 Surf Sports on East 3rd Street (located on the water). We plan to paddle out to the Bay and around two islands and return to 101 Surf Sports within 2 hours. The cost is $30 per person using double kayaks or $40 for a single kayak. You can also use your own boat.  If you want to be included in this activity, let Thomas (thomas.ervin@comcast.net) know and give him a deposit of $20 by September 20 if you want to rent a boat.  A minimum of 6 people are needed to make the event a success.

Due to an enthusiastic Marin response from outside the religious institutions, UUCM is relinquishing its slot for the summer Sunday shelter dinners. We look forward to serving once more when the winter schedule restarts.
