August 30, 2015: "How to Live in Sin"
Rev. Dr. Jay Atkinson, with Linda Haumann, Worship Associate
Government corruption, corporate greed, institutional racism, economic imperialism - these and more are the social and structural sins that surround us, in which we are trapped and are often complicit against our wills, often even against our knowledge. How do we strive to live with moral integrity in such a world, and work to oppose its values, without being dragged down to its level?
Jay Atkinson retired in June 2011 from 32 years of full-time service in Unitarian Universalist parish ministry. During those ministries he also served on the adjunct faculties of our UU seminaries. Currently he is a Research Scholar at Starr King with a focus on UU history.

RE nUUs | | Good August Greetings:
Summer vacation went quickly, again, sigh. Some very beautiful days up here at UUCM I did not mind at all. (A few really hot ones too.) One of the hot ones was during UUCM Summer camp and we ran through a sprinkler! Ah ... [See camp photos]
Under way we have a Service Project with our teens: I have been to the Computer & Technology Resource Center, ( CTRC) twice now. Other UUCM folks have gone too. Teens and parents both welcome. Go to the CTRC website to know more and sign up to volunteer. Ask me.
Our Whole Lives - This year the OWL Program Team (OPT) is supporting Adult OWL starting Sept 20th, the 25 session 7-9 grade curriculum, collaborative programming with the Hannah Project and a local private school. We have a ministry of information.
Our RE Sunday morning classes start back up on September 20th, but don't miss the September 13th Ingathering with the water blessing ritual. Not to be missed.
Jeffrey Melcher, M.Div. Director of Religious Education Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin

"Things Everyone Should Know"
| |
The following bon mots were written anonymously by members of the congregation at the service of Sunday, August 23, 2015, in response to a piece of flash fiction read aloud by UUCM Readers Theatre. Members wrote their ideas about "Things Everyone Should Know" on sticky notes and posted them on a board on an easel in the foyer. Readers Theatre thought everyone should know about these!

It could ALWAYS be worse!
Live with gratitude.

Basket Share Program
| | UUCM's Basket Share Program, a project of our Social Justice Committee, is one of many connections to our community. Several Sundays per year, we share our offering basket with another nonprofit organization that provides essential community services. Most recipients serve the Bay Area and are ones UUCM members and friends are directly involved with. This means that our collective Basket Share dollars make a big difference right here in our local community. or Joan Nelson 415-506-4166 |
Book Group | | The UUCM book club is meeting September 16 in the Clara Barton Room at 7:30. We will discuss a Smithsonian Magazine article from October 2012, " The Dark Side of Thomas Jefferson". If you would like to read it email Sher Sheldon shershel@comcast.net for a link. We are also going to have an experimental book selection for the coming year. Please bring two or three suggestions of books and your calendars so we'll have choices for the year. We will offer tea and cookies. Please join us for our scintillating discussions. |
September 13 Potluck
| |
We will be having our Annual September Potluck on September 13th. This is our first social event for the coming year.
Please plan to bring a dish to share.
A-F Main Dish
F-L Vegetable or Salad
L-T Fruit or Bread
T-Z Dessert
The Hospitality Committee will be asking for volunteers to assist with this event.

Water and Stones | | Don't forget to collect water and/or stones on your summer journeys. These will be used in our fall ingathering ceremony, September 13. |
Pastoral Care | | This committee would like to thank all the contributors who put cards in the PC box at UUCM! We have been blessed with a plethora of get well greetings, etc.! Thank you all so much for thinking of others.
You help brighten the day of members who may be ill, families who have lost relatives, etc. We are grateful for your generosity. One caveat, we do not send birthday cards. Otherwise don't toss, give them to the PC Committee! |
UU Kayak Trip Saturday October 3, 2-4 pm!
| | Would you like to spend part of a sunny Saturday afternoon in a kayak watching wildlife? The proposed trip will leave 101 Surf Sports on East 3rd Street (located on the water). We plan to paddle out to the Bay and around two islands and return to 101 Surf Sports within 2 hours. The cost is $30 per person using double kayaks or $40 for a single kayak. You can also use your own boat. If you want to be included in this activity, let Thomas ( thomas.ervin@comcast.net) know and give him a deposit of $20 by September 20 if you want to rent a boat. A minimum of 6 people are needed to make the event a success. Thomas |
