Sunday Worship Service 10:30 am

June 21, 2015: "Dualism: The Big Deception" Rev Bob Drake, with Jason Stearns, Worship Associate
In every day of our lives, we operate as if our separation from others is obvious. We take for granted that mind or spirit vs. body, God vs. Creation, physical vs. spiritual, life vs. death, good vs. evil, win vs. lose, heaven vs. hell, self vs. other, old vs. young, right vs. wrong or real vs. unreal are all truly distinct. These dualisms, learned from our religions and philosophies, separate us from the rest of everything -- and they may all be illusions. We will talk about where dualism comes from and will think about what our world might be like if we were to transcend either/or thinking. I will suggest that the dualistic mindset is the single most destructive notion in our lives and we will try to get a glimpse of what it might be like if we lived as if all things are unified and universal.
Rev. Bob Drake is a long time UU Marin member. He just completed his Master of Divinity at the San Francisco Theological Seminary, where he is Adjunct Professor of Restorative Justice, Trauma and Spirituality. Bob also has a Master's degree in Conflict Resolution. He is a clinical interfaith hospice chaplain and has started a new ministry: Ocean Soul Renewal, leading workshops for those going through significant loss or life change, or are in need of finding new hope and meaning. Bob is an ordained interfaith minister and an aspirant for ordination as a Unitarian Universalist Minister.

DRE Summer schedule - My contracted DRE time (30 hrs/wk) ends mid-June and starts again in mid-August. The RE Committee, via the RE Enhancement Fund, is keeping me on, 15 hours/wk during Jun16th-Aug 15th, to run a summer program and prepare for our UUCM Summer Day Camp the first two weeks of August. During this time I will be at UUCM a majority of the Sundays. I will have sporadic summer office hours during the week. I can be reached via email and phone or to make an office appointment. There may be a day or two turn-around, but I will get back to you.

Forum: Connecting Farm to Fork | | JUNE 22, 2015, 6:30-9:00PM FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, SAN RAFAEL The forum will feature the film, "Ripe for Change," a compelling primer on sustainable agriculture in California. "Ripe for Change" makes clear the interconnections between the viability of family farms, eating seasonally and locally, and how these are impacted by pesticides, fossil fuels and corporate control that dominate the food system. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion.
Presented by The Interfaith Sustainable Food Collaborative. More info. |
Volunteers for Woman's Shelter not needed | | Due to an enthusiastic Marin response from outside the religious institutions, UUCM is relinquishing its slot for the summer Sunday shelter dinners.
