Sunday Worship Service 10:30 am chalice

May 17, 2014: "Through Poets' Eyes: Questions at the End of Life"

Tom Traylor, with Linda Haumann, Worship Associate

Confronting our own mortality or accompanying a loved one through their final days of life raises profound questions about the meaning of our lives and the experience of dying. Much has been written in recent years about the journey toward the end of life, from medical explanations of the dying process to philosophical and spiritual reflections on the end-of-life experience. The images and metaphors of poets also open lines of sight into the questions that arise at the end of life. In this service we will consider some of those basic questions through the lens of the work of two "poets of the land," Robert Frost and Wendell Berry, and reflect on how we may embrace both the challenges and the possibilities for growth which come at the end of our lives.

Tom Traylor is the chaplain for the Kaiser Permanente hospice program in Hayward. He has spent thirty years as a hospice professional listening to and learning from the experiences of individuals and families dealing with terminal illnesses. Tom's work with the dying and those who love them has confirmed for him the remarkable resilience of human beings facing life's most profound experience. Tom is an Episcopal priest who in addition to his hospice work serves as a pastoral associate at All Saints' Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Perhaps his greatest claim to fame is being the partner of UUCM pianist Milton Wong.

UUCM's early Sunday morning 9 am Contemplative Service in the Fireside Room is a lay led service.  Readings introduce a silent period to reflect on a topic or idea, followed by an opportunity to share individual thoughts.

Come and widen our circle. All are welcome!

From the DRE:

A pondering: In thinking about the vision for our Ministry of Religious Education, I have been thinking of joining many other UU congregations to make RE = Religious Exploration. It has a nice sound to it and may describe more clearly what we actually encourage and do with our families and children. What do you think?

This Sunday May 17th:

1) A children's performance of "Dust in the Wind" grades 1-8. (They are cute as all get out, and I can't help but sing along.)

2) Ali and Michael Jenkins lead the parent group discussion 10:45-11:45.

Summer Day Camp at UUCM, Aug 3-7 & 10-14 [follow this link]

Blessed Be,

Touch of Beauty - Seeking Volunteers

We are reaching out for volunteers to bring a flower arrangement - or other beautiful and beloved object - for everyone's enjoyment on a Sunday morning. I am putting together a schedule for June, July and August, and hope that new folks will give it a try, as well as those who have already participated. Here is why it's a wonderful, worthwhile project: (1) It's a one-time only - though you may, of course, repeat. (2) It brings everyone pleasure (3) You may dedicate your TOB to the memory or honor of a loved one (4) It's easy -- we are ALL amateurs! (5) You'll have flowers all week.

You may think of your own reasons to participate, but I hope you will! Please email sallyrschroeder@comcast.net with your choice of date. A second choice would be helpful in case there are multiple requests for the same date.

THANK YOU in advance! Sally

Rotating Emergency Shelter

Joan Nelson reports that the Rotating Emergency Shelter program (operating for six months every winter for the past seven years) will probably be operating year round before long.

It's closed now, but will have a test run for 56 nights from June 8 to August 3She will be signing up Sunday night dinner volunteers again. This time there will be no sign-up board in the UUCM foyer. Signups will be done electronically! Stay tuned.
