April 26, 2015: "Border Crossing"

Meredith Guest, with Jason Stearns, Worship Associate

We separate ourselves by all kinds of borders both internal and external. Internal borders arising from fear, mistrust and group identity manifest in external borders dividing nations, states, religions and races. Increasingly, however, it is becoming obvious that the problems we face as a species cannot be contained within borders, nor can solutions if they are to be real and effective. As religious (and not-so-religious) progressives who believe in the inherent worth and dignity of all people, we are constrained to cross borders whenever we can - intentionally, respectfully, courageously - in order to affirm and celebrate our common humanity, even if doing so requires risk, struggle, and sacrifice.

Meredith Guest lives in Sonoma County with her partner and a bunch of rescued animals on what has become a small wildlife preserve. She substitute teaches in various schools in Petaluma and is active in trying to create habitat for Monarch butterflies. Long ago and far away she was a Southern Baptist minister who got fired and became a Montessori educator. Eventually, she came out as transgender and for several years thereafter was a member of the Unitarian Universalist congregation of Petaluma (UUP) where she still occasionally attends. She has two grown and quite wonderful children.

Bovine Wisdom from UUCM's Greener Pastures:

The other day in our greener pastures, a cow with big brown eyes, turned toward me and said:  "We have to stop meeting this way."  "And what do you mean by that?", I asked.  She responded, "You all have become too dependent on my meat! If a four person family skips meat and cheese one day a week, it's like taking your car off the road for five weeks.  Remember that you can always try the "Vegan Cowboy Tamale Pie" which is just as filling and tasty."  That cow certainly made some 'down-to-earth' sense.  So here is the recipe for your pleasure:

http://www.food.com/recipe/vegan-cowboy-tamale-pie-238061

Remember that this world is not all black and white, like Holstein cows.  We live in a nuanced world.  Yet if we eat vegetarian at last one meal a day, with nuts, lentils and beans having the lowest scores for environmental impact for proteins, we can mitigate our dietary footprint on our earthly pastures.  Can you imagine if everyone in the U.S. ate no cheese or meat just one day a week, it would be like taking 7.6 million cars off the road (or not driving 91 billion miles.)  Yes, think BIG!  And then, if you still claim your omnivore status, remember to think small.  Think chicken or turkey.  Just don't let them fowl know I said so!

Next week, by popular demand we will kick it up with the Spicy Buffalo Cauliflower 'Wings.'

Book Club - May 20
book pile

For the May 20th book club we have chosen Pulitzer Prize winner author, Jane Smiley's new book, 2014 National Prize winner, Some Luck.

Summary: On their farm in Denby, Iowa, Rosanna and Walter Langdon abide by time-honored values that they pass on to their five wildly different children: from Frank, the handsome, willful first born, and Joe, whose love of animals and the land sustains him, to Claire, who earns a special place in her father's heart.

Each chapter in Some Luck covers a single year, beginning in 1920, as American soldiers like Walter return home from World War I, and going up through the early 1950s, with the country on the cusp of enormous social and economic change. As the Langdons branch out from Iowa to both coasts of America, the personal and the historical merge seamlessly: one moment electricity is just beginning to power the farm, and the next a son is volunteering to fight the Nazis; later still, a girl you'd seen growing up now has a little girl of her own. Some Luck, the first of an intended trilogy, cycles through birth and death, passions and betrayals, among characters we come to know inside and out.

Join us at 7:30 for a review moderated by Sandy Steinman.

Note:  This is a new book and has a short wait.  Reserve a copy now.
