March 15, 2015: "Sharing: A Common Cause that Unites Us All"

Dianne Estrada, with Linda Haumann, Worship Associate

There is an organization, Share the World's Resources (www.sharing.org), whose stated goal is nothing less than a worldwide "call to sharing" as a common cause that can help connect the world's peace, justice, pro-democracy, and environmental movements under one united call for change. What does this mean? Is this an appropriate goal? Does Unitarian Universalism have a role to play? Come join Dianne Estrada, currently serving as President of the Board of Trustees of UUCM, to explore these questions.

Please Welcome Susan Britton.

UUCM Parent Group - This amorphous group is made up of whomever shows up on a given day. Nine parents met on 2/22 and some are asking for monthly instead of bimonthly meetings. These dates are currently scheduled: 4/19 & 6/21 These might be added in: 3/29 & 5/17. Members and friends welcome.

The 4th - 8th grade group is going on a ROPES course 3/15, advance registration required. Contact Monique Webster. Then they will work at the Food Bank on 3/22.

"Third Time is a Charm"

uucmchalice

Our Gratitude and Commitment Campaign is coming along nicely.  Last Sunday, thanks to the participation of Karen Auroy and her fabulous barnyard animal sounds, the dapper Ben Gale as the hospitable bartender, the one and only Milton Wong with a cowboy musical theme we learned of the cowboy sustaining values of truth, honor and justice.  The (w)Rightful Reverend sang "Lavender Cowboy" which was written by UUCM's first minister.  Fun is being had by all.

And the annual commitments are still coming in.  So if you haven't yet gone to the website to make your pledge, please do so; or talk to Wrangler Janette in the office (or in the foyer this coming Sunday.). Remember the third time is a charm and in this third week we would be really charmed if you returned your form.  Then you can sit back and enjoy the antics of the Third Chance Saloon.  See you on Sunday at the UUCM Corral!

Pledge numbers as of March 11:

36 households have pledged $82,314.

Represents about 1/3 of all households.

Social Justice Luncheon March 29

Our own UUCM member, Geri Randall, came from a poor family. Her mother had only a sixth grade education, her father a GED obtained in the Navy. Her own education (she is an attorney) marked a "sea change" in her circumstances, and led to her desire to make advancement through education available to others.

At a San Francisco UU Sunday service, she became aware of ANSWER, a program founded and run by a UU which provides educational opportunities as an exit from caste and poverty in Nepal. She has already sponsored six  kids, and has even gone to Nepal to experience the program first hand.

Reminding us that ANSWER embodies the Chinese proverb: "If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime," she invites us all to attend the Social Justice Committee's educational luncheon on March 29. 12:30 Fellowship Hall.

Suggested food Donation $8 (or bring a dish to share.) Nobody turned away.
