Sunday Worship Service 10:30 am chalice

December 7, 2014: "Living by Liberal Faith"

Rev. Dr. Jay Atkinson, with Nani Ranken, Worship Associate

UU theologian Paul Rasor says that our liberal religious tradition "is not for the faint of heart," suggesting that Unitarian Universalism offers a challenging pathway not always easy to follow. What are the historic elements of this liberal faith that we call our own?  What does it mean to be faithful Unitarian Universalists in today's world, and how do we help one another live up to that ideal,  as individuals and as congregations?

Contemplative Service 9 am  chalice

Leaders:

12/7   Doug Kerr

UUCM's early Sunday morning 9 am Contemplative Service in the Fireside Room is a lay led service.  Readings introduce a silent period to reflect on a topic or idea, followed by an opportunity to share individual thoughts.

Come and widen our circle. All are welcome!

Questions, email Carol Kerr at drckerr@pacbell.net.

JO NAPOT - "Hello" in Hungarian.  Please mark Sunday, December 14 on your calendar to come and hear the current Balazs scholar from eastern Europe-Rev. Dr. Szaboles (Sabi) Czire.  He is an assistant professor in the Unitarian Department at the Protestant Theological Institute in Kolozsvar, Transylvania (which is now part of Romania).  One of his responsibilities is being the Youth/RE Coordinator for all the Unitarians in Transylvania.  He is studying at the Starr King School for the Ministry and preaching at different churches on the West Coast.

The Unitarians in Transylvania are ethnically Hungarians so we will have a refreshment period following the service featuring special Hungarian foods.  At this time you can chat with our visitor and ask questions about the Balazs scholar program, the speaker's life, and travel programs to Transylvania.
Christmas Eve Refreshment Potluck
cookies Good news -- Valerie Taylor has graciously volunteered to coordinate the Christmas Eve Refreshment Potluck!  Thanks Valerie!  If you would like to help, please contact Valerie.

All proceeds will be used to help send our youth to the General Assembly in Portland in June 2015.

If you'd like to staff a table or donate crafts or costume jewelry to sell, please talk to Margaret Johnston, Marge Hollinger, or Mary Gilstrap.

Shelter Dinner Thank you
This week the Jenkins family (Michael, Ali and Nathaniel) along with Michael's brother John (and his wife Lucy) Hoeber, prepared, served, and cleaned up after a particularly well thought-out shelter dinner. Nathaniel regaled the shelter ladies with knock-knock and why-did-the____cross-the-road jokes.

Remember, you can invite friends, neighbors, associates, anyone...to join you in  this hands-on service opportunity.

This week, Dec. 7, we still need a vegetarian dish for 12 people. And anything else you might want to provide. Contact: figleafjoan@comcast.net

"Justice is what love looks like in public." Dr. Cornel West
UUCM is one of many UU congregations that participate in the interfaith Standing on the Side of Love advocacy campaign. The campaign began as a response to the 2008 shooting at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee. It has evolved into a month-long reimagining of Valentine's Day as a social justice holiday. Read more about SSL and its history

Each year, UUCM recognizes a Marin County resident who lives and acts according to the SSL values of inclusion, diversity, and equality. For the 2015 award, please consider nominating someone you know (from Marin but not from our congregation this year) who is deserving of this important award.

Deadline for nominations: December 31. To nominate someone, email socialjustice@uumarin.org. Tell us the person's name and briefly describe how s/he has exhibited the SSL values of inclusion, diversity, and equality. The next Award will be presented Feb. 15. Past Recipients:
  •  2014: Marje Park (UUCM)
  •  2013: Katherine DaSilva Jain (UUCM)
  •  2012: Paula Pilecki (Spectrum)
  •  2011: Joan Nelson (UUCM)
Book Club

The UUCM Book Club has chosen The Meaning of Existence by E.O. Wilson for our January 21 meeting.  In The Meaning of Human Existence Pulitzer Prize-winning biologist Edward O. Wilson grapples with existential questions, such as examining what makes human beings supremely different from all other species. We do not meet in December so the extra month has allowed us to choose this recent publication.  The library has 38 copies and there is a wait for this book so reserve your copy now.  We meet at 7:30 pm in the Clara Barton room; all are welcome.
