August 10, 2014: "Our Stories, Ourselves: The importance of our narratives, past, present and future for drawing meaning and creating hope in our lives"
Robert Drake, with Bev Munyon, Worship Associate
Recognizing the importance of our stories - one's personal narrative, to every day living through adversity, change, illness, loss and grief, is the first step toward creating reasons to hope and struggle forward. We are as dependent upon hope for survival as we are for clean water and air. The future narrative we create for ourselves provides meaning... or it does not. Your story gives your life meaning, reasons to believe in your past and reason to hope in your future... something to believe in, to survive for - to live for. Today we talk about story, narrative, and ways to generate hope, meaning and resilience.
August 17, 2014: "The Most Important Discovery of Science"
John Severinghaus, with Nani Ranken, Worship Associate
Oxygen, often called the most important discovery, isn't. After seven oxygen discoverers, an eighth scientist discovered that the world of science was wrong about water. That made possible the great revolution of chemistry.
John Severinghaus and wife Elinor joined our fellowship in the early 1960s as friends of Chip's father Sam Wright. Their four children were brought up here. John joined the UCSF medical school faculty in 1958. His research has been in respiratory physiology, altitude, and physical monitoring devices like the pulse oximeter and blood gas analyzers, his invention.

Message from the Board President
| | Hello everyone. This is the first monthly message from the Board President. There is a lot going on and a lot of excitement all around. Our first official meeting of the incoming Board is August 26. The new board will also be coming together on September 6 for a "Board Retreat", to get to know each other and learn what it means to be a board member. The Board of Trustees consists of: Margaret Johnston, Treasurer; Dani Lundbaek, Secretary; and Michael Jenkins, Ali Jenkins, Norm Davidson, Kristin Jensen, and Henry Kingdon, General Trustees. We have one opening, and the Vice President has yet to be named. Have you seen the new photos on our photo wall, at the end of the hall? If not, check it out! If you would like an updated photo, please place your name on the sign-up sheet that is also on the wall. Please mark your calendars for the first Congregational Conversation of the new program year, which is happening September 14, after the service. The agenda is not yet finalized, but we will certainly be exploring our hopes, fears, and priorities for the upcoming program year, and in the process strengthening our community. Please be sure to come, so that your voice and ideas can be included! Best, Dianne |

| | Great news! We have several brand new workshops lined up for the Retreat that you won't want to miss. We still need at least two craft offerings. Are you skilled in a hands-on craft-like activity that you would like to share with the congregation? Anyone for leather punching, origami folding, candle making, t-shirt bleaching/printing, silk painting, knitting, scrap booking, rock polishing or any other craft? The audience can be kids to adults. Our draft schedule can be accessed at one of the links below just to whet your appetite. If you have already volunteered to present a workshop, please let us know if you prefer a different time period. We can be flexible! Current Immigration / Refugee Crisis
| | People have been asking how they can help out with the refugees coming into the states in our District and Region. Our congregations from San Diego County to Ventura County have been collecting needed items and connecting with refugees in the locations our government has placed them. We are also working with a number of local groups. We have set up a Refugee Fund at the Pacific SouthWest District for those that want to contribute money to help with the work with the refugees. Checks can be sent to the PSWD with Refugee Fund in the notes. They can be sent to: PSWD-UUA 2052 Norma Street Oxnard, CA 93036-2711 These funds will be shared with the groups we are working with who are working directly with the refugees. |
