June 29,2014: "Standing Up"

Rev. Carol Hovis, with Worship Associate Nani Ranken

We live in a time where it seems easy to give lots of reasons of why we cannot solve our own problems or issues facing our community.  These excuses and rationales leave us immobilized to make changes in our lives and world.  What does it mean to stand up?  How might we make personal changes that can impact our lives and our communities?

The Rev. Carol Hovis, the Executive Director of Marin Interfaith Council since July 2004, is an ordained Presbyterian minister. Prior to her position with MIC, she served for six years as the Community Advocate with the San Rafael Canal Ministry in San Rafael, CA.

July 6, 2014: When the B is Silent

Lindasusan Ulrich with Worship Associate Karen Auroy

Did you know that the first LGBTQ pride parade commemorating the Stonewall riots was organized by a bisexual? Or that bi people constitute the largest population within the LGBTQ community? Yet those who love beyond gender are frequently demonized or made invisible, often with devastating consequences. Join us to learn more about the challenges and gifts of this group hidden in plain sight. Led by guest speaker Lindasusan Ulrich, a graduate of Starr King School for the Ministry and a Candidate for Unitarian Universalist ministry.

Small Group Ministry "Refresh"

Friends, as you know we have a long tradition with Small Group Ministry at UUCM.  The program has appeared in varying forms and with varying names (it is also known as Covenant Groups, Evensong, or Care rings).  There are a few groups that have persisted to this day since the last time the program was launched.  These groups nurture their members by providing a safe space for open and honest sharing and exploration of meaning in our lives.  It is time to "refresh" the program, and make sure that everyone who would like to take part is invited into a group.

What is Small Group Ministry? Unlike socially-oriented affinity groups, SGM is a spiritual program with a well-defined meeting structure, allowing for deep sharing and spiritual growth, and is guided by a wealth of resource material that is available from the UUA.  For further details open this brochure.

A word about existing groups:  If you are in an existing group that is nurturing you, by all means continue in that group.  At the same time,  we urge you to join a new group as well.  Joining a new group will allow you to expand your relationships within the congregation.  In addition, your past experience with this process is a valuable contribution to a newly forming group.

What is the first step?  Within the next week, you will receive an email with a link to a very short survey, that will take just a minute to complete.   Please follow the link as soon as you get it, and click on "I am interested" or "I am not interested".  It is as simple as that.  If you indicate that you are interested, more information will be forthcoming.  If you indicate that you are not interested, we will stop bothering you!  So please follow the link and answer the survey either way.

We thank you for taking the survey and hope that you will consider joining the Small Group Ministry program, as we strengthen the bonds of our beloved community.

Best regards and blessings,

Small Group Ministry Coordinator (Dianne Estrada

P.S. -- Note from Chip:  What we now call Small Group Ministry has long been a part of Unitarian Universalist communities in one form or another. Over its many incarnations with us it has offered the opportunity to learn about each other in deeper and more meaningful ways. I'm happy that we are going to develop this rich resource again in this congregation.  It offers unique opportunities for the enrichment of our congregational life and ever deeper looks at our liberal tradition's spiritual underpinnings. A wonderful way to share and learn together. Please consider joining one of these new groups as they are offered this fall. -- Rev. Chip

Congregational Retreat, Oct. 24-26, 2014

Mark your calendars!  Our Congregational Retreat will be held in October this year, from Friday evening through Sunday morning.  This is an all-congregational event held at the beautiful Walker Creek Ranch in West Marin (approximately 30 minutes west of Novato).  There is a flexible attendance/pricing plan to make sure that everyone can attend as their time and budget allows. You can stay in a semi-private lodge or family style dormitory with separate bedrooms for each family and bathrooms down the hall.  Meals include Friday night dinner, three meals on Saturday, and Sunday breakfast.  We will have our traditional campfire sing on Friday night and Barn Dance on Saturday night, plus all of your favorite activities and some new ones -- Night Hike, Ropes Course, Tie Dye, and many more fun activities for young and old.

Included in the Saturday program are concurrent sessions of approximately 1.5 hours each, where our members lead sessions of many different types -- arts & crafts, discussions, body movement.  Do you have a special talent or skill that you would like to share with the congregation?  Do you have expertise on a topic that might make an interesting discussion session?  The Retreat may be the perfect opportunity -- let us know!

Registration forms and Parent's/Guardian's Consent and Release Form. Watch this space for more information and updates.

Expense Reimbursements for 2013-14 Due

uucmchalice

If you have any unreimbursed (approved) expenses for the current year, please submit them no later than June 30. You can print a request form or pick one up in the Community Room (wall pocket just inside the door on the right). All forms must have the correct budget (listed on the back of the form) and be approved by a committee or event chair, or Board President (Mikey) or Treasurer (Steve Webster). They can be mailed, e-mailed or put in Janette's box in the Community Room.

We aren't able to reimburse expenses after July 15 for the 2013-14 year. In order for expenses to not hit next year's budget, it's important that they are submitted in the year they occurred. Please let Janette know if you have any questions at [email protected] . Thank you!
