Minister's Musings: June 2014

Summer has arrived and I look out my window. My cactus has shot up to over four foot tall and has more paddles than you can count and lots of yellow flowers. Hard to believe that it was just ten inches high and only two hands when I planted it three years ago.  It's remarkable what good roots, the right soil, and care can do.  And once again those wonderful purple flowers that spring from bulbs planted here before we moved in have brought out their globe like domes. Each stem topped with a profusion of flowers, like the hair of Medusa, and this morning dancing with busy bees.

And this summer we are just as busy, having put in place for the first time a Summer R.E. program. This planned RE time for children adds another layer to the high quality of our summer programming. The best seminary students we can find will be speaking.

We are trying to address the current needs of our members as well as those people who traditionally relocate during the summer and are in need of schools and churches for the family.  It is exciting that we are now going to let families as well as paired and single adults know about and participate in the fullness of our liberal religious community. It's not unlike the flowers in my yard whose nectar attracts bees; this kind of activity at the church brings in new folks.  And even if they don't return, like a community of bees, they let others know about what they have discovered.

As we move into our sixth year together we are poised on a whole new time at UUCM.  We step into this future with a stability that has not been seen here in over 30 years.  We can do tremendous things if we nurture our roots, care for one another, and continue to build deeper and richer soils in which to plant the new!

Expense Reimbursements for 2013-14 Due

uucmchalice

If you have any unreimbursed (approved) expenses for the current year, please submit them no later than June 30. You can print a request form or pick one up in the Community Room (wall pocket just inside the door on the right). All forms must have the correct budget (listed on the back of the form) and be approved by a committee or event chair, or Board President (Mikey) or Treasurer (Steve Webster). They can be mailed, e-mailed or put in Janette's box in the Community Room.

We aren't able to reimburse expenses after July 15 for the 2013-14 year. In order for expenses to not hit next year's budget, it's important that they are submitted in the year they occurred. Please let Janette know if you have any questions at [email protected] . Thank you!

All proceeds go to benefit UUCM.

Congregational Retreat, Oct. 24-26, 2014

Mark your calendars!  Our Congregational Retreat will be held in October this year, from Friday evening through Sunday morning.  This is an all-congregational event held at the beautiful Walker Creek Ranch in West Marin (approximately 30 minutes west of Novato).  There is a flexible attendance/pricing plan to make sure that everyone can attend as their time and budget allows. You can stay in a semi-private lodge or family style dormitory with separate bedrooms for each family and bathrooms down the hall.  Meals include Friday night dinner, three meals on Saturday, and Sunday breakfast.  We will have our traditional campfire sing on Friday night and Barn Dance on Saturday night, plus all of your favorite activities and some new ones -- Night Hike, Ropes Course, Tie Dye, and many more fun activities for young and old.

Included in the Saturday program are concurrent sessions of approximately 1.5 hours each, where our members lead sessions of many different types -- arts & crafts, discussions, body movement.  Do you have a special talent or skill that you would like to share with the congregation?  Do you have expertise on a topic that might make an interesting discussion session?  The Retreat may be the perfect opportunity -- let us know!

We will be taking signups in September. Watch this space for more information and updates.

Please join us for a family friendly barbecue, hosted by the UU Marin Dinners for Eight group!

Where:  Stan and Sher Sheldon's home

What:  Potluck BBQ - dish assignments to be determined

When:  Sunday, June 29th 3:00 PM

Please RSVP to Dani Lundbaek at [email protected].  Your RSVP gets you the exact address, and a requested potluck dish assignment.

All are welcome and encouraged to join us - families with children, singles and couples of all ages!

Dinners for Eight is made up of a group of UUs and friends who have dinner together throughout the church year in someone's home. Participants are divided into groups of eight, singles as well as couples and families. The make-up of the group and hosting changes every month, so you have a chance to mingle with different people for great food, fun, and conversation. It's a chance to get to know one another better than you might by just saying "hi" at church. For each dinner, the host provides the main dish and other attendees are assigned an appetizer, a salad or dessert. Most of us also bring wine!  We'll be starting up again in the fall.
