Sunday Worship Service chalice

March 16, 2014: "Secular Chaplains -- John Burroughs"

Chris Highland, with Bev Munyon, Worship Associate

Chris Highland is the author of Meditations of John Burroughs and nine other books.  John Burroughs was an American naturalist and essayist important in the evolution of the U.S. conservation movement.  The presentation will offer a closer look at the "sacred secularity" or "natural spirituality" evident in the writings and philosophy of "Chaplain Burroughs."

Chris has degrees in Philosophy and Religion from Seattle Pacific University and San Francisco Theological Seminary.  A Freethinker now, he was a Presbyterian Minister for 14 years and an Interfaith Chaplain for 25 years. Chris is currently teaching a class at the College of Marin on "A Wild Spirituality of Nature" (it will be repeated in the spring).  His website is www.chighland.com.

Practicing Generosity

yellow logo Generosity is the most natural outward expression of an inner attitude of compassion and loving-kindness. - Dalai Lama XIV

This year's theme for Gratitude & Commitment month is "Practicing Gratitude and Generosity."

Please make your annual financial commitment to UUCM as generous as your personal circumstances allow. There are three easy ways to do it:

  1. Complete the online form and set up automatic payments.
  2. Mail your financial commitment form, which you were mailed, to the church office.
  3. Stop by the Gratitude & Commitment table in the church foyer after the 10:30 service during March to fill out a financial commitment form or to drop off the form you filled out at home.
  4.

Questions? Visit the Gratitude & Commitment table in the church foyer during coffee hour on Sunday or visit our Gratitude & Commitment web page!

The Spring Fling Auction is in the air

Saturday April 19, 2014

Spring Fling auction 6-9:30 pm.

Isn't the weather beautiful -- that's because Spring is in the air and that means that our Spring Fling auction is just weeks away! Enjoy a Taste of Marin, great bites from local caterers and eateries, libations, Sandy Geller on the piano, raffles and a thrilling auction.  We hope you will come and bring a friend or two or twelve.

Do you have something you could donate to our auction? Perhaps a dinner experience, a service, a precious antique, a gorgeous gift basket, a handcrafted wrap, or a beautiful piece of art. Or maybe you could ask your favorite restaurant or service provider to donate a gift certificate. To submit an auction item, please fill out this donation form and return to box in the foyer or community room.

We also could use help at the event, for example setting up, serving food, or coordinating the children's program. Please sign up to help using the following Signup Genius link.

See you there!

On Sunday, March 30, a service celebrating our dear Nona will be held at UUCM at 4:00 PM. The service will be followed by a reception with appetizers and beverages. In an effort to assist the family with planning, please RSVP to Janette at office@uumarin.org if you will attend.

New Art Exhibit in Fireside Room

We have installed a wonderful Photography Exhibit by  John Kouns, which shows the importance and passion of  Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement.

If you can corner John, he will tell you the stories surrounding the photos.

John Kouns' career was as a professional photographer/activist, who did industrial photography as a job and documentary photography for his soul.

Read more about John.

Book Group

Our next meeting is March 19 at 7:30 in the Clara Barton Room. The selection is People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks.

One of the earliest Jewish religious volumes to be illuminated with images, the
Sarajevo Haggadah survived centuries of purges and wars thanks to people of all faiths who risked their lives to safeguard it. Geraldine Brooks has turned the intriguing but sparely detailed history of this precious volume into an emotionally rich, thrilling fictionalization that retraces its turbulent journey. A complex love story, thrilling mystery, vivid history lesson, and celebration of the enduring power of ideas comes to life. --Mari Malcolm
