Sunday Worship Service
|
February 16, 2014: "Take a Deep Breath"
Rev. Chip Wright, with Sue Fleckles, Worship Associate
We need air, food, and water to live. Just like we need love, joy and meaning. These are fundamental to life, elements we have evolved in symbiosis with.

Congregational Conversations Feb. 16
| | From the Committee on Ministry: Please come join in on Sunday as together we chart our course as a congregation. This will be the third Congregational Conversation. Lunch is included.
We are building on the first two Conversations where we gathered information on "What brings us to UUCM and what keeps us coming?"--and the second where we took time to learn in more depth about each other, across generations: "Who are we here and now?" Now we are ready to ask "Where do we want to go together?" This will be a fun, interactive opportunity, led by the Board and COM and a practical, purposeful way to get your voice heard as we plan for our future! Even if you are not a member yet, please come join in imagineering next steps in congregational history."
Child care will be available. Carol Kerr, for the Committee on Ministry

From the DRE: Childcare
| | UUCM tries its best to provide childcare for internal events and meetings. Beyond Sunday mornings, each committee or group is responsible for organizing childcare. The DRE is available to help arrange for coverage: paid and/or volunteer. Some restrictions apply. Childcare reservation procedure: To publish an RSVP for childcare for UUCM events: 1) Contact DRE about need for childcare. (Two weeks to a month is good. Four days is too late.) The budget expense line item needs to be provided at this time. 2) Designated contact, someone connected to the event, needs to be listed on the publicity. (Not the DRE.) 3) Designated contact collects names and ages of children, parent/guardian contact information. 4) Two days before event, confirm with the DRE the information collected. Childcare can be cancelled up to 2 days prior to event. 5) If no children show up or no cancellation is made, one hour of compensation is still due to childcare provider. In the Faith, Jeffrey Melcher, Director of Religious Education DRE@uuMarin.org |

Gordon Stewart, 1932-2014
| | Hope Stewart's husband, Gordon, passed away from complications of pneumonia Monday, February 3. He had also lived with Lewy Bodies Dementia for the past ten years. Many of our members will remember both Gordon and his wife Hope, who was our primary photographer for many years. Hope was a member since the 1970's. She was involved in the membership committee. Hope and Gordon went on many church camping trips. They enjoyed dinners for 8 for at least 15 years. Former minister Rev. Bettye Doty officiated their marriage in 1977. Several years ago Hope joined the fledgling Unitarian Universalists of Petaluma (UUP), where Hope remains quite active. A Celebration of Life Memorial service is planned for Saturday April 5 at 2:00 PM at the Petaluma Women's Club, 518 B Street (Home of UUP). In an effort to assist Hope and her family with planning, please RSVP for the service to Janette at office@uumarin.org by March 25. |
UUSC film about the Sharps' War | | TWO WHO DARED - THE SHARPS' WAR: UUCM will show the 1 and ½ hour film on the Sharps' risky adventures on Saturday, February 22 between 7:30 and 9 PM in Fellowship Hall. Don't be late. Entrance is free but we will ask for donations to and memberships in UUSC. Treats and decaf coffee and tea available. Waitstill and Martha Sharp volunteered to go to Prague in 1939 to help feed, shelter and rescue refugees, including anti-Nazi dissidents and Jews. In 1940 they went back to Vichy France on another rescue mission. Their work led to the formation of the Unitarian Service Committee (now UUSC) Waitstill Sharp was the minister of the Wellesley, MA church. Martha was a social worker. The Sharps risked imprisonment by the Nazis and threats by soldiers. Their two small children were taken care of by Unitarian members of their congregation. Film shows scary Nazis, Hitler, frightened parents, and bewildered children with testimonials by rescued children now in their 80s. Archive footage. John Quinley, UUSC Local Rep. |
Celtic music, healing music, and chants
| | Celtic singer Laura Berryhill and keyboardist, harmonica and tabla player Anton Mizerak present an evening of Celtic song, transformational healing music, and chants from around the world on Sunday, March 16 at 7PM at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin. $10 - $15 suggested donation. Laura Berryhill, from Mount Shasta, has a masters degree in music history from the University of Oregon, where she focused on early 17th-century Italian sacred music. As a vocalist she works in a variety of musical styles, from early European music, to folk music of the Celtic cultures, to new age and jazz. Anton Mizerak lives in Mount Shasta and writes his music in nature, believing that our organic experience of sun, wind, water, snow and earth, transmitted through music, can be a valuable nurturing and healing experience. Anton plays keyboards and harmonica. His music has been featured on the nationally syndicated radio show "Echoes" and the digital New Age Music formats "Soundscapes" and "Spa Channel." Anton and Laura have toured together extensively since 2010, performing to acclaim at over 400 venues throughout the Western states.
