Sunday Worship Service chalice

Feb. 2, 2014 "A Wish for Winter Before Spring"

Rev Chip Wright with Worship Associate Bev Munyon

My memories of Groundhog's Day in Northern California are full of wild purple irises along the damp green coastal hills.  But the hills are brown this year, dry.  We are looking at some of the most significant changes in our weather ever recorded.  What can we do as we move into this new time?

Upcoming services

Congregational Conversation Sundays: Feb. 16, and March 30.

Contemplative Service

UUCM's early Sunday morning 9 am Contemplative Service in the Fireside Room is a lay led service.  Readings introduce a silent period to reflect on a topic or idea, followed by an opportunity to share individual thoughts.

Come and widen our circle. All are welcome!

Questions, email Carol Kerr at drckerr@pacbell.net.

Basket Share on February 9
basket share

Our February Basket Share will be with Youth Enrichment Strategies (YES), a West Contra Costa Co. nonprofit that provides children and their families with experiences in nature -- to ignite their imagination, build self-confidence, and enhance social skills. YES brings children from gritty and often dangerous Richmond neighborhoods to camps in natural settings across Northern California. The first difference to strike the children when they arrive at camp is the safety. "There are no gunshots, only crickets," one 8-year-old child said.

Come to our 10:30 a.m. service on February 9, prepared to financially support 2 great local nonprofits: UUCM and YES!

Balazs scholar Feb. 9

On Feb 9 our minister for the Sunday service will be this year's Balazs scholar, Rev. Karoly Vass. Rev. Vass has been serving as assistant minister in his home congregation in Sepsiszentgyorgy while completing a master's degree in theology.  He is also a student of economics.  He says, "I am particularly interested in social ethics, but also in how Unitarian Universalist churches are organized, how religion is reflected in your daily lives and how you welcome newcomers and share your values with them."

Rev. Vass is married, he and his wife Gyongyi have two small children, Benedek, three years old and Veronika, two.

Please plan to attend church on Feb. 9--a date easy to remember, it is the day after the crab feed on Feb .8--to hear Rev. Vass.

Wellness Dinners

The Social Justice Committee sponsors dinners for the homeless once a month on 2nd Tuesdays.  This month we wish to give a big shout out to Sally Schroeder, Judy Finn, Pamela Lyons, Henry Kingdon, Carol and Walt Littrell.

The Chaplain Paul Gaffney and his crew make the dinner & we bring salads and/or desserts. Then we dine with the attendees.  I think we get more joy out of this experience than the guests!  You can be sure that this fresh food is always devoured and that they are most grateful for a real meal!

If you and your family would like to participate in the February Wellness Dinner on the 11th (Tuesday) at 5:15pm, please email or call Carol Littrell cjwlittrell@aol.com or 883-9676. Leave a message and Carol will get back to you.

It is an easy way to make yourself and others feel blessed and meet a real need!

Social Justice/Green Sanctuary

Are you are committed to working for environmental and economic sustainability? If so, the Unitarian Universalist Association offers you a systematic structure based on education, service, witness and advocacy.

In 2008, UUCM (after completing and documenting a fairly rigorous program) was designated by the UUA as an accredited "Green Sanctuary." The UUA now offers a re-accreditation process. Talk with Joan Nelson who documented the 2007-2008 projects and activities. And go to

Book Group

Our next meeting is February 19 at 7:30 in the Clara Barton Room. Marge Hollinger will lead the discussion of My Beloved Country by Sonia Sotomayor.

"Amazon Best Books of the Month, January 2013: Happily, it is becoming a familiar story: The young, smart, and very hardworking son or daughter of immigrants rises to the top of American professional life. But already knowing the arc of Sonia Sotomayor's biography doesn't adequately prepare you for the sound of her voice in this winning memoir that ends, interestingly, before the Yale Law School grad was sworn in as the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice. Hers is a voice that lands squarely between self-deprecating and proud, grateful and defiant; a voice lilted with bits of Puerto Rican poetry; a voice full of anger, sadness, ambition, and love. My Beloved World is one resonant, glorious tale of struggle and triumph. --Sara Nelson"

Members and visitors are welcome to join our discussions.

Art Shows

Kathy Truax has added several lovely paintings to her exhibit in the Fireside Room.  Be sure to take a look. Contact information for Kathy is krtruax@att.net.  Note that 20% of any artwork sold is given to UUCM.

*Now we are hoping to entice other artists to exhibit their works in the Fireside Room....Paintings, Photography, Collage, Pen and Ink, Charcoal, Fiber, etc, etc, etc.   One person or a group.

*Please contact Carolyn Planakis at cplanakis@aol.com or 415-479-5617.

Soon you too will get an opportunity to donate to the auction.  Within the next couple of weeks, we'll make available the Auction Donation Forms online, via email and on paper.
