From the Administrator:

There have been a large number of e-mails that have been going to office@uucm.org. This e-mail address is for the administrator at a UU congregation in Milford, New Hampshire. She has been very kind and patient with letting us know when she gets our e-mails, but please remember that my address is  office@uumarin.org. Many e-mail applications memorize every e-mail address you enter, so if the uucm.org e-mail is popping up in yours, please delete it. I promised her we would endeavor to do better!

Social Justice Dinner: Let Food Be Thy Medicine

Saturday, January 11
5:30 - 8:30 (Doors open at 5)

Hippocrates advised more than 2000 years ago, "Let food by thy medicine and medicine be thy food." So why do we follow a Standard American Diet (SAD) that is making us sicker than people in other countries, despite the fact that we spend more on health care?

Join us for a hearty, delicious whole-food, plant-based dinner and view Forks Over Knives - a powerful documentary that explores decades of scientific and clinical proof that this lifestyle can prevent and even reverse many of the most common chronic illnesses that plague those who eat the Standard American Diet (SAD). Plus, find out how what we eat impacts:

  • Social justice
  • Climate change
  • A clean, potable water supply
  • World hunger
  • The health care crisis
  • And, potentially, the preservation of life itself

$12/person for a tasty, nourishing, healthy "Food for Life" dinner. Reservations required by January 4. Email Food4Life@uumarin.org with questions or to reserve your space. Bring your friends and neighbors!

Auction wishes

Guess what?  On April 19th at 6 p.m. we will be holding the UUCM Auction! We would love you to come and find the one perfect item, or better yet, perhaps the perfect ten items!

When I was a little girl, sometime before Christmas, a huge book would arrive in the mail.  On that hallowed day the Sear's Catalog arrived -- my private compilation of all possible wishes.  I would sit for hours with that book wishing --- wishing for warm feety pajamas, a microscope with slides containing blood and bugs, or maybe a tool set with Allen wrenches.  I would wish and wish and wish.

So, to help you find just what you wish for at the UUCM auction, we are asking that you provide us a list of your Auction wishes.  I'll use myself as an example, I wish that UUCM would auction off a homemade triple chocolate birthday cake!  Or I wish that UUCM would auction off jewelry or beautiful pieces of art depicting our beloved flaming chalice. What do you hope to find at the Auction?  What do you need?  What might help you ease your very busy lives?

You can send your wish lists to Lori Smith at LASMITH7@ATT.NET, by calling her at 415-456-3822, or by whispering them to her as you pass in the foyer!

Book Group
book pile
There will be no Book Group meeting in December.  Our next meeting is January 15 at 7:30 in the Clara Barton Room.  Karen Greener will lead the discussion of Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea by Gary Kinder.

"Enormous publicity surrounded the 1989 recovery of an estimated billion dollars worth of gold, one of the greatest sunken treasures ever found, from the 1857 wreck of the SS Central America.  . . The story of the wreck itself, and the staggering effort it took to locate and recover the treasure, is the subject of Kinder's involving, fully realized history of the ship.. . The eccentric Tommy Thompson, the inventor/scientist/adventurer, . . is constantly at the center of activity that involves not just finding a wreck 200 miles offshore but the juggling of investors, competitors, lawyers, scientists, a sea captain and an endless cast of cantankerous characters."(Publishers Weekly)

Members and visitors are welcome to join our discussions.

Dec. 15 Shelter volunteers included:

Grace and Owen Dearborn, Lauren Long and Joyce Rhodes.

As winter approaches, we are starkly reminded that our least fortunate neighbors are homeless all year long:
*Please put your name on the Sunday night Women's Shelter Dinner sign-up board in the foyer.

*If you haven't yet responded to the Social Justice Committee's homeless appeal letter please do so as soon as you are able.

*Bring Socks, Toiletries & Food Bank contributions to the containers.  (New white socks. Tube socks are best because they are a fit-all sizes.)

Cleaning out closets and drawers? Instead of

bringing bags of old clothes to church take your unwanted items to GoodWill in San Rafael (Third & Lincoln) and be sure to tell the attendant to earmark your receipt for Ritter House. Ritter House, in turn, will hand out vouchers to the homeless people who can then find the kind of clothing they need.

Ever feel frustrated that you're not doing enough to make a difference in the world? Bring your concerns to the UUCM Social Justice Committee.
