Sunday Worship Service
|
October 27, 2013: 'Spiritual But Not Religious' Rev Chip Wright with Worship Associate Karen Auroy
Mainline religious institutions are seeing their membership shrink as people identify more and more as spiritual but not religious. They find meaning and community outside traditional church models.
Note: This is a Response Sunday - there will be time to share your comments and observations following the sermon.

RE nUUs | We are giving kids the opportunity in class each Sunday to make a donation to the Giving Basket. As of Oct 20th they have raised $23 and some change !! Do you or your child have a recipient organization to suggest?
Values
The RE Committee has adopted a set of words to express some of the core values we want to teach and encourage in our children. These are in addition to the UUA Principles and Sources. We want to give the children and parents of UUCM a clearer picture of the values we want to engender in ourselves and the world.
These values were "field tested" with the 4th-5th grade group. The one they added was "Joy". The RE Committee gladly added this to its list and is grateful for the wisdom of our children. To see the full list, go to the UUCM RE page. Jeffrey Melcher, M.Div. |
Poll about weekly publication | | Take a poll as to how often our email weekly should be published. (a question brought up in the communications committee)

Church/Community Day of the Dead Hike | | Saturday, November 2, 2013 10 am to 3 pm Have lunch with your ancestors on San Pedro Mountain! Bring photos or mementos, if desired. Meet at the Marin Civic Center parking lot on Armory Drive near the post office. Bring a sack lunch, a liter of water and a sense of humor. We will have lunch at the Nike site with a 360 degree view. Those who wish can continue to the mountain top. However, due to trees, the view from the mountain top is mostly blocked. Click here for a map of the trail. This event is sponsored by the Religious Education Program. Please address questions to Thomas Ervin [email protected]) or Jeffry Melcher ([email protected]). See you there! |
PASTORAL CARE FOR ALL AGES | | If you or your friends have elderly parents for whom you/they will be responsible when a medical crisis arises (even if your folks don't live near or even in this state) consider attending the Senior Classes Nov. 3 & 17.
What kind of information should you have? What are the decisions you will be asked to make? What will be your responsibilities at that time? The more info we have in advance, the more likely the crisis is going to be manageable, i.e. you will not be caught unaware of your tough choices and the data needed to make them. Anything you learn can be shared with your siblings etc.
We are sponsoring Lisa Brinkman, a gerontologist, to lead us through the process. BE BETTER PREPARED FOR THE INEVITABLE. Lisa will be at the November 3rd class and Rev. Chip will lead the November 17th class which will include Elder Planning Part II, Transportation, Giving, and other issues as well as a Q&A. Call or email Carol Littrell to attend; lunch is provided & therefore, requires registration. (do not email the office). Email [email protected] or call 883-9676. |
Budget Discussion on Nov 10th | | UUCM's Finance Committee will hold a budget discussion after the service on November 10th, 12:30PM. All UUCM members are invited to attend. Our agenda will be "Towards a balanced UUCM budget: options and possibilities." Please attend and we'll speak together!
If you need childcare while attending, please email [email protected].

Salad for Homeless
| | For all of us very busy UUers and friends, here's a way to do a service by reaching out to those who need us so much. Bring a salad, any kind, to the 1st Presbyterian Church on Tuesday November 12 at 5:15pm. We are invited to dine with people who are in need. It will do your heart good and find folks are not so different than ourselves. Remember families are welcome! It is over by 6:30pm so you still have your evening! Please call or email Carol [email protected] or 883-9676. We are much needed and appreciated! Many thanks to these wonderful volunteers for October: Richard R., Gene P., Sandra M., Joan N., Anise F., Linda S., Katherine & Jinendra J., Walter L. & Carol. If I have left you out, please inform me and forgive me.

Book Group
| | Our UUCM Book Group meets on third Wednesdays at 7:30 in the Clara Barton Room. Members and visitors are welcome to join our discussions.
For November 20 we will be reading Open Secrets , eight short stories by Alice Munro, this year's winner of the Nobel Prize for literature. Mary Bicknell will lead the discussion.
"Open Secrets is a book that dazzles with its faith in language and in life."-New York Times Book Review. "With a few strokes of her pen, Munro has the unerring ability to familiarize us with a foreign country or the entire life of another person. . . Munro's women must take repeated flight from the harshness of their realities -- bad spinsterhood, worse marriages -- into their imaginations, where wrongs are alternately redressed or allowed to fester into self-doubt and guilt." (Kirkus Review)
Note: The Book Group will not meet in December. Questions contact Nani.
