Minister's Musings
| | Rev. Chip WrightJune, 2013
As May winds down and the summer months approach I wanted to share my plan for a theme for my Sunday services next church year. As the new millennium is on us in ernest now I have been amazed at all of the varied and different spiritual approaches, many of which are new ways of addressing some of our deepest human needs. Some of these are actually very old, being rediscovered and combined with new understandings of our universe. Like so much in these dramatically changing times, people are exploring and adopting these alternate forms of mainline religious traditions to fill their religious needs. There is even a name for such folks, the "nones" (derived from those with no religious background) or 'the spiritual but not religious'.
I plan to take some time during my study weeks this summer and through the year to delve into this topic to bring you some of what I find and feel about these new ideas and the growing spiritual but not religious community and where we might fit as Unitarian Universalists. I see this as a particularly interesting conversation for our unique liberal religion, as we have throughout our history been on these cutting edges of the spiritual and religious conversations. So if you have any thoughts on this to offer, like specific trends of this kind you might like to hear addressed on Sundays, send me a text, call, or email me at Minister@UUmarin.org.
I feel that this focus on "New Spirituality" and its many forms and practices will also fit well with the ongoing Congregational Conversations we have planned. These conversations will help us articulate how we see ourselves and where we wish to go in the coming years. The dates are in place for these gatherings after Sunday services so mark them on your calendar: October 13, November 24, February 16, and March 30.
Have a great summer!

Wanted: YOUR Fundraiser Ideas | Fundraisers are always better when the ideas come from you, our members and friends! If you've got a great idea for a fundraiser for next year, now is the time to tell us about it - the Board will be calendaring next year's fundraisers at our June meeting. Tell us your idea by filling out this short application and returning it to the UUCM office by Friday, June 14. For more information, visit our Fundraisers page. You may be thinking "My idea is great, but I can't possibly do it all by myself!" Don't worry, people will step up to assist you. They always do. There are many ways to help you recruit volunteers, but we need to know your idea first. Questions? Please email Susan Ingersoll at fundraiser@uumarin.org or Janette Morrow at office@uumarin.org.
An application is now required per our new Fundraising Policy, so that the Board has the necessary information to effectively evaluate all fundraisers. |
Book Group - June 19
| | Our Book Group meets on third Wednesdays at 7:30 in the Clara Barton Room. Members and visitors are invited to join us in lively discussions.
The selection for June 19 is Restless by William Boyd:
"Boyd's ninth novel, an absorbing historical thriller, is loosely based on the history of a covert branch of British intelligence created to coax America into the Second World War. The story unfolds on parallel tracks as Sally Gilmartin, born Eva Delectorskaya, a Russian emigree recruited into the British Secret Service in 1939, reveals her clandestine past in an autobiography that she gives to her daughter, Ruth, a graduate student and single mother living a dull civilian life in Oxford in 1976." Foster Care Parents needed
| | It has been called to the attention of the Social Justice Committee that there are more than 6,000 children in the Bay Area who need foster care.
Becoming a foster parent can offer rich rewards, and often transforms foster parents as well as the foster children in their care. Here are some great reasons to become a Marin County foster parent:
Live With Purpose. Become A Success. Build Your Family. Share Your Values. Watch A Child Bloom & Grow. Be Part of A Miracle!
