Sunday Worship Service chalice

Feb. 3, 10:30 am: "Just a Taste of Spring!"
Rev. Chip Wright with Worship Associate Rodney Gothelf

It's early February.  The sap is just starting to run in the trees while along the north coast the purple wild iris and bright white doilies of Queen Anne's lace pop their heads up through the emerald green grasses.  What a time to be alive!

February, 2013

It's February; and as some of you know this has been my favorite month for a long time.  It is chock full of things that I really appreciate!  It is the month of George Washington's birth, of Abraham Lincoln's as well, and Charles Darwin too!  And not to be forgotten, my birth month as well.  Although I do not consider myself in the same league with the aforementioned luminaries, I do appreciate the fact that I made it back to be human this time around.  I suppose that is to be expected, as they say in Yogic tradition:  once you've made human, it's human all the way up from there.

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention Groundhog Day as well--my most favorite holiday.  As a child I used to take Groundhog Day off from school if it landed on a week day.  My parents would give me a note without any question.  When I was in high school my favorite thing to do on Groundhog Day was to drive out to Point Reyes, stop and buy crab fresh out of the pot in front of the grocery store.  Then I would drive to Drakes Bay and eat it as I watched the surf and the brown pelicans feed.  These are really wonderful memories.  And they can be repeated:  if you like crab, especially fresh crab, then you need to be sure to get tickets for our annual Dungeness Crab and Clam Chowder Extravaganza coming up on Feb 16th.  There will be lot of great food, company, raffles, and hey, after all, it is February!

"It takes a village ...."
It has been a fabulous few weeks having jumped on board here as DRE. I really enjoy being back in this beloved community. It is an honor to serve and I will do the best I can. Much of this job is about supporting and engaging all of you. Religious education is a community effort.

Thank you to everyone who has kept the program running smoothly by teaching, cleaning, doing committee work, organizing the Retreat, offering to help, and so much more. Thank you to all of you.

NEW Children's program

This year we will have a special program for children (Nursery through 3rd grade) during the crab feed.  The program will include stories, pizza, movie and games. UUCM Congregational Retreat
May 3-5, 2013

At the upcoming retreat, we will have four segments on Saturday with activities for all ages. This week we are focusing on a workshop being planned by Dianne Estrada. She will lead a discussion entitled: The Power of Language to Shape Reality. This discussion will focus on redefining words such as God, Sin, Salvation, Church and Grace. The reason to redefine these words is to strip away old, uncomfortable baggage added through previous experiences and use UU principles to reclaim the words for use in our worship and our discussions with people who may say that they are spiritual but not religious and do not participate in organized religious services. By attending this workshop, you will be empowered to help grow our movement, add new members to our congregation, and enhance your own spiritual journey.

We still have room for one or two additional workshops in addition to the one presented above and one led by Thomas Ervin entitled: Extreme Ice - Climate Change Action. If there is a workshop that you want to give or a topic that you would like someone else to present,  Please let Thomas Ervin know! thomas.ervin@comcast.net

The pricing/application sheet for the 2013 UUCM Congregational Retreat is linked below. Application and full payment is due on March 24, 2013.

78 Toiletry Kits made
Our 1-6 graders packaged up 78 little toiletry kits for distribution through Homeward Bound. They were very glad to have a way to help. Kids worry about homelessness too and want to have a meaningful impact.
House of Hope Discussion Group

I would like to invite you to join a discussion group that will start on February 10 in the Fireside Room. In this discussion group we'll explore liberal theology and engage in Unitarian Universalism's "free and responsible search for truth and meaning" by engaging our own, and each other's, theological understandings.  We'll structure our discussions around the book a House for Hope, by John Buehrens and Rebecca Ann Parker.  This book uses the metaphor of a house to explore what grounds us, what expands us, what shelters us, and what gives us hope.  We'll consider questions such as "What is the end and essence of life? How can we come to terms with evil and what can protect life from harm? Is it reasonable to believe in God? What does it mean to be human, to be right with all that is? What saves us and what are we called to do? What is the nature and purpose of religious community?"

The length of the discussion group will depend on your
interest - perhaps we'll meet twice or maybe we'll wish to continue for many sessions.   The first two sessions will be held on February 10 and March 3 from noon to 1:30 pm.  If you would like to attend please email me at intern@uumarin.org or just come on by!  Look forward to seeing you then.

Irene Stefanko, Ministerial Intern

Book Group
book pileOur UUCM Book Group will meet on Wednesday, February 20, at 7:30 PM in the Clara Barton Room to discuss The Women by T. Coraghessan Boyle. This widely acclaimed novel is a fictionalized account of the life of Frank Lloyd Wright told through the experiences of the four women who loved him.    "The befuddling complexity of Wright's personality keeps writers coming back. And it's this complexity that T. Coraghessan Boyle pursues with his own characteristic energy . . .  His prose is full of vivid descriptions . . " (The New Yorker.)  Dee Spake will lead the discussion.  Members and visitors are welcome.  Contact: Nani Ranken 898-8558.
Social Justice Luncheons
Luncheon and speaker, 12 noon. A $6 donation is suggested, no one turned away.

March 17 - Bridge of Understanding
Jes Richardson, creator of the ten foot tall Gandhi Puppet, is building a "bridge of hearts" between the people of the United States, Israel, and Iran.  The Dear Iran Project, established after his second trip to Iran in 2010, cuts through politics by creating direct people-to-people connections.  Find out how you can participate by joining Jes on March 17.
Women and Religion Retreat
The Women and Religion retreat is happening on March 1-3, 2013, at the Enchanted Hills Camp in the foothills above Napa, open to all UU women and friends.  Our theme this year is "Courageous Women".   You can learn more about Women and Religion and the retreat itself, or download forms at our website.
