Reach Out and Read Announces IMLS Toolkit

Reach Out and Read is pleased to announce the launch of our Prescription for Success Toolkit, one of the results of our Prescription for Success project, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Reach Out and Read, libraries, and museums are natural partners in promoting early literacy, and can support each other in many different ways.
This toolkit presents the results of the survey of medical practices from around the country to learn how they currently work with local libraries and museums, and is designed to provide ideas and resources for Reach Out and Read coordinators, librarians, and museums working together.

FOX CT Interview Below

Locally in Connecticut, the IMLS grant has enabled projects such as the successful Clifford Literacy Day and Curiosity Day (in honor of Curious George) at the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society.  "Reading is the big idea!" is a new collaborative partnership between the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society and Reach Out and Read Connecticut.
On Saturday, June 27, and Saturday, September 19, the Prescription for Success project supported an afternoon of fun with Clifford the Big Red Dog and Curious George, respectively. Each day included character story time, followed by fun character-related crafts, a snack and Clifford or Curious George videos on a big movie screen! The first 100 families each day received a brand new Clifford or Curious George book from Reach Out and Read Connecticut paid for by the IMLS grant mentioned above! On September 16, Reach Out and Read Connecticut's Executive Director, Christine Garber, spoke with FOX CT about our organization and our recent partnership with the Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society. Watch below or click here.

Barnes & Noble Book Fair With Clifford the Big Red Dog

On August 29, Reach Out and Read Connecticut held a book fair at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Farmington, CT. Barnes & Noble graciously hosted the event and donated a percentage of their sales to our program. All who attended had lots of fun and enjoyed hearing from Dr. Seuss author, Tish Rabe, and participating in Clifford the Big Red Dog story time led by author T. Stephens.  Both Rabe and T. Stephens are members of the Connecticut Advisory Board for Reach Out and Read.  Special thanks to Barnes & Noble, Tish Rabe, T. Stephens, and all of our volunteers for making this great day possible!

New Research Study Shows Reading Aloud
Has A Direct Effect on Brain Development

Dr. John Hutton
In August, a new research study led by Dr. John Hutton was published in the
journal Pediatrics. This study looked at the brain activity of 19, 3- to 5-year-old
children as they listened to stories. The study showed that reading aloud to young children has a direct effect on the part of their brain associated with learning to read. This adds valuable weight to Reach Out and Read's current body of evidence showing that encouraging families to read aloud to their children will improve reading skills.

Dr. Hutton's research was funded in part by Reach Out and Read through our Young Investigator Awards (YIA) Program.

CNN, Huffington Post Parent, and the NY Times have all published articles about this exciting new study.
