Reach Out and Read, libraries, and museums are natural partners in promoting early literacy, and can support each other in many different ways.
This toolkit presents the results of the survey of medical practices from around the country to learn how they currently work with local libraries and museums, and is designed to provide ideas and resources for Reach Out and Read coordinators, librarians, and museums working together.

New Research Study Shows Reading Aloud
Has A Direct Effect on Brain Development
I n August, a new research study led by Dr. John Hutton was published in the
journal Pediatrics. This study looked at the brain activity of 19, 3- to 5-year-old
children as they listened to stories. The study showed that reading aloud to young children has a direct effect on the part of their brain associated with learning to read. This adds valuable weight to Reach Out and Read's current body of evidence showing that encouraging families to read aloud to their children will improve reading skills.
Dr. Hutton's research was funded in part by Reach Out and Read through our Young Investigator Awards (YIA) Program.
