A Message from Executive Director Brian Gallagher...

Dear Colleagues,

We have been saddened in the past few weeks at the passing of two long-standing members of the Reach Out and Read community.

Gretchen Hunsberger joined Reach Out and Read as Coordinator of Lynne Community Health Center, became Massachusetts Program Director in 2004 and finally worked as Director of Program Quality and Training at the National Center. Her commitment to Reach Out and Read was multi-layered, and she brought creative entrepreneurship, a meticulous attention to detail, and an ability to make things happen to all levels of the organization. Gretchen was the voice of thinking bigger and doing better. Most of all, Gretchen shared her passion with all of us for the most important thing - children's lives changing because of reading.

Gale Ivie was the regional leader for Kaiser Permanente's relationship with Reach Out and Read in Southern California for many years. Passionate about working to meet the physical, emotional and intellectual needs of under-served people, she diligently partnered with pediatric departments to assure timely and age-appropriate distribution of books to children, who would otherwise not have access to reading materials. Gale was a force of nature, who has left an indelible mark on the lives of so many within Reach Out and Read and in many organizations in the local community and nationally.

While we mourn the loss of these two bright lights in our organization, we are inspired by their legacy to the work of Reach Out and Read.

With best wishes,
Brian

 A Partnership Between Reach Out and Read and Cuyahoga County Public Library

Take a look at this interview shown on WKYC TV, with Reach Out and Read Co-Founder, Dr. Robert Needlman and Sari Feldman from Cuyahoga County Public Library talking about a great new partnership.
As a follow-up to last month's Leadership Bulletin, this book, that recognizes Reach Out and Read as a "prime example" of "programs now working to solve the problem of poor academic achievement in our children" is now available on Amazon.

Check here for details and links to events where Dana will be promoting her book - she would be happy to know about what's going on with Reach Out and Read in your area, and we'd be happy to make an introduction.

QI Project to be Discontinued after December 2015;
Materials and MOC Records Will Be Retained

Since first being offered on a pilot basis in 40 Florida practices in 2009, nearly 600 providers in more than 200 practices around the country have successfully completed the Reach Out and Read Quality Improvement (QI) Project for Maintenance of Certification (MOC) and Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit.  Results of the project have been impressive: books given in more than 95% of well visits, accompanied by advice in 93% of visits.

With the overall MOC environment in transition, Reach Out and Read will no longer offer the QI project to providers, effective January 2016.  The current participating cohort will be our last.

Going forwards, Reach Out and Read will build on best practices that participating sites developed through the QI project over the years.  Representatives from a variety of Reach Out and Read affiliate offices are currently contributing to the development of a standard set of program attributes and metrics that will enable participating practices, and the affiliate program staff supporting them, to evaluate and document program quality.

Reach Out and Read is grateful to the staff of the Vermont Child Health Improvement Program who contributed their expertise to the development of the QI Project and to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, whose materials were integral to successful implementation of the Project in so many practices throughout the Reach Out and Read provider network.

Following completion of the current QI Project cohort's activities in December 2015, materials from the Project will continue to be available in myROR.  Reach Out and Read will also retain MOC records of providers who completed the Project for seven years as required by the certifying Boards.  However, webinars and QI data entry into the myROR system will be discontinued.

You may continue to direct questions about the QI Project to  QI@reachoutandread.org.
