NOTES FROM NATIONAL,  August 2015
Dear Colleague,

We hope that you enjoy the August issue of Notes from National!
Please forward these notes to your Reach Out and Read providers, colleagues, and partners.

As always, we greatly appreciate all that you and your colleagues do to support Reach Out and Read and the families you serve.

Kind Regards,

The Reach Out and Read National Center Staff

Progress Reports are Due September 1st

To solicit new funders and report back to current funders, we need your timely and accurate submissions. Please help us by submitting your reports by September 1st
If you do not complete the report, your site will be ineligible to receive any donated books the National Center may receive in the next 6 months.

When completing your progress report, please note:
  • The report DOES NOT total the books distributed numbers while editing - the numbers will populate once you hit SUBMIT.
  • There are three crucial tasks:
  1. Refresh your provider list in the CONTACTS section of www.myROR.org by
    a.  Deleting providers who have left and adding providers who are new. (Training passwords are then auto-generated to the email inbox of new providers.)
    b.  Adding each provider's specialty: Family Practice or Peds.
    c.  Entering provider credentials (MD, DO, NP, PA), in two places (once in the dropdown menu, and then also typed in the box immediately below.)
  2. Ensure that the total number of providers listed on the progress report equals the number of providers listed in the CONTACTS section of your myROR.org page. Reminder: all providers are required to complete the Reach Out and Read online core training (free, 1.25 CME). To retrieve their password, providers can click "Forgot my Password" after entering their first and last name at www.myROR.org.
  3. Determine your book distribution numbers and current book inventory. How many books were distributed during the six month period of January - June 2015? How many are left on your shelves? (This is a good check for YOU. Did you have enough books for every well visit? If not, what strategy is in place for funding this year's books?)
Thank you for your cooperation!

New Research That Supports Reach Out and Read

Over the past couple of weeks there has been a flurry of interest in the national press (reports in CNN and Huffington Post Parent) around the publication of research showing differences in brain activation associated with reading aloud to young children.

This is exciting evidence that supports
the effectiveness of the Reach Out and Read model.

In response to this Dr. Perri Klass, our Reach Out and Read National Medical Director, wrote an article for the New York Times Well Health Blog, that examines this study, alongside another showing that reading aloud exposes children to a wider vocabulary than just talking to them.

Dr. Klass explains very clearly how these two new studies help to elucidate the mechanism of how reading aloud to young children supports the development of early literacy skills, and ties the research into the work of Reach Out and Read.
