THE LATEST RESEARCH SUPPORTING REACH OUT AND READ
Good morning,

Over the past few weeks there has been a flurry of interest in the national press (reports in  CNN and Huffington Post Parent) around the publication of research showing differences in brain activation associated with reading aloud to young children.

This is exciting evidence that further supports
the effectiveness of the Reach Out and Read model!

On August 18, an article by Dr. Perri Klass, our Reach Out and Read National Medical Director, was posted on the New York Times Well Health Blog, that examines this study, alongside another showing that reading aloud exposes children to a wider vocabulary than just talking to them.

Dr. Klass explains very clearly how these two new studies help to elucidate the mechanism of how reading aloud to young children supports the development of early literacy skills, and ties the research into the work of Reach Out and Read.

Reach Out and Read is supported by 15 other independent research studies as well as by the American Academy of Pediatrics, most recently in their 2014 policy statement; Literacy Promotion: An Essential Component of Primary Care Pediatric Practice.

We hope that you enjoy this latest research.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or if you would like additional information. For ways to help or to get involved in our work, please click here.

Thank you very much for your interest and support of Reach Out and Read and the children and families we serve.

Kind regards,

Chris
