A Message from Executive Director Brian Gallagher...

Dear Colleagues

I always enjoy meeting up with our regional leaders and hearing the latest news from our Reach Out and Read network. Last week, I had the pleasure of spending time with Megan Wilson, her team, a few national board members, and medical providers and site coordinators at Reach Out and Read Colorado's bi-annual statewide conference in Denver.   And Lynne Burke, Director of Reach Out and Read Minnesota, stopped by the National Center while in town to root for her daughter in the Boston Marathon.

In Colorado and Minnesota, Reach Out and Read is being integrated into community and statewide efforts as part of a broader system to support children and families. This is reflective of developments in Reach Out and Read across the country. As a result of your hard work, relationship building, seizing of opportunities, and collaborative approach, we are becoming a program that is an integral piece of the pie, or spoke of the wheel, in early childhood development. I'm proud that our two federal grants - from Innovative Approaches to Literacy and the Institute of Museum and Library Services - are part of this growing movement.

Through creative partnerships, we are bridging progress in health and education, bringing children's doctors into broader conversations about early childhood education and family engagement strategies, to have a collective impact on the futures of America's youngest children.

With best wishes,

Brian

This week we are highlighting a map prepared by the Wisconsin coalition, as a good way of presenting the Reach Out and Read sites in the various counties of Wisconsin. Karin Mahoney, director of Reach Out and Read Wisconsin says "We purchased a map template and update the map at least twice a year, as our growth is pretty nuts"!
