At his 2-year well-child visit, Benjamin's mother told his pediatrician that she was concerned he didn't speak more than five words.

The pediatrician-a Reach Out and Read provider-reminded her that reading aloud to Benjamin daily will increase his vocabulary.

As the pediatrician spoke to Benjamin's mother, the little boy flipped through the Reach Out and Read book given to him at the start of the checkup. The pediatrician turned to Benjamin and said "dog" and "ball" as she pointed to the pictures. Benjamin repeated "da" and "ba", and his mother was amazed at how this little interaction allowed for her son to attempt two new words.

From that point forward, the mother understood how critical reading is to her son's vocabulary development and made it a part of their bedtime routine.

This holiday season you can help Benjamin-and millions of children just like him-grow up with boundless words and the chance for a bright future. Our simple, yet effective intervention empowers parents to create a strong language foundation and a love of books in their children from the start.
