Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based nonprofit organization

that prepares disadvantaged children for academic success.  Through our Connecticut Early Literacy Initiative, we empower parents as their children's first teacher and prepare children to enter kindergarten ready to learn to read.  We are the only early literacy and parental engagement program that builds on the unique relationship between parents and doctors to develop early literacy skills in young children via the existing healthcare infrastructure.

Your support of our Connecticut Early Literacy Initiative allows our team of trained pediatricians to deliver our early literacy intervention to 38,000 low-income children ages 6 months through 5 years.  Fifteen independent studies show that our model works;  in the preschool years, children served by Reach Out and Read scored 3 to 6 months ahead of their non-Reach Out and Read peers on vocabulary tests. No other early literacy program has our scope, scalability, evidence, and value.

Started in 2002 by three friends from the University of Notre Dame, Better World Books uses the power of business to change the world. They collect and sell books online to donate books and fund literacy initiatives worldwide.

Their LEAP Grants (Literacy and Education in Action Program) are intended to compile a wide range of local projects and fund the ones that have the biggest bang for the buck.
