AAP Policy Statement Recommends Early Literacy Promotion as a Standard Part of Pediatric Primary Care!

(l-r) Brian Gallagher, Reach Out and Read Executive Director; Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; Greg Worrell, President of Scholastic's Classroom and Library Group; and Fan Tait, MD, FAAP, Associate Executive Director of AAP and Director, Department of Community and Specialty Pediatrics.

At the fourth annual Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) America meeting in Denver, Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced a new collaborative effort of Too Small to Fail, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Scholastic Inc.

and Reach Out and Read to raise awareness among parents about early language development.  For the first time the AAP will promote early literacy-beginning from an infant's very first days-as an "essential" component of primary care visits.  Through this commitment, the partners will ensure that doctors, parents and caregivers have the information, tools and books they need to promote reading aloud to children every day starting in infancy. The effort takes a multi-pronged approach toward equipping parents with the best tools to ensure that their children are prepared to learn as they enter school:
  • Too Small to Fail and the AAP-an organization representing 62,000 pediatricians-will share messages across their networks and media platforms about the importance of talking, reading aloud and singing to children from birth in order to build vocabulary and promote healthy brain development.
  • To jump start the partnership,  Scholastic has donated 500,000 new, age-appropriate children's books for distribution through Reach Out and Read, the non-profit organization that works with 20,000 medical providers nationwide to promote early reading and give books to families at pediatric visits.
  • Reach Out and Read will also distribute a toolkit to be developed by the AAP, with support from Too Small to Fail, which will equip pediatricians with resources to educate parents on how to use everyday activities to improve communication with their infants and toddlers.

The AAP's policy statement is a true validation of the work we are doing at Reach Out and Read to encourage families to read together and develop critical early literacy skills in children before they enter pre-school and kindergarten.  Read more about the AAP policy recommendation and CGI collaborative at:

Early Childhood
Advocacy Day

 Dr. Linda Mathew

Katie Ahearn, Director of Institutional Advancement, and Christine Garber, Connecticut Executive Director, were thrilled to participate in Early Childhood Advocacy Day at the State Capitol on March 19 on behalf of Reach Out and Read.  The Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance and Connecticut Parent Power hosted the annual event, themed "Early Experiences Matter."  The day began with community speakers and state legislators discussing the importance of investing in our young children early and often to provide them and their families with the opportunities and resources they need.  Dr. Linda Mathew, Reach Out and Read Medical Champion at Alliance Medical Group in Middlebury, presented during the morning program; she stressed that, " it's these early experiences that shape and develop the young brain.  We want these experiences to be positive experiences so that our children have a strong foundation and their brain develops optimally. "

After the program we, along with dozens of other early childhood supporters, headed over to the Legislative Office Building to meet with many state legislators.  We encourage you to follow up on our efforts by talking to your own local legislators about the importance of early childhood programs.  Investing in our young children is critical; they are our future!

We invite you to make it an annual tradition and join us next year at the Capitol for Early Childhood Advocacy Day!

New Partnerships

In May, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) established a new alliance with Reach Out and Read; we are thrilled to have the AAFP as a literacy partner! In many areas, family practitioners are the only medical providers available for children and families. Family physicians are able to emphasize the importance of early literacy and reading to the entire family. To read more about our new partnership with the AAFP, click here.

Another exciting partnership has started as Reach Out and Read begins working with the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA). Reach Out and Read Massachusetts Medical Director, Dr. Marilyn Augustyn, presented at the AAPA conference in Boston. At the conference, the AAPA hosted a book drive for Reach Out and Read, encouraging attendees to donate new books to their local Reach Out and Read program.

Each of these new partnerships offer so much potential to reach even more children. We look forward to working with them!

________________________________________
Dear Reach Out and Read Colleagues and Supporters:

As we kick off the summer I am thrilled to introduce you to our newest Reach Out and Read Connecticut colleague, Meghan Blomberg.  Meghan joined our Connecticut team in April as our Connecticut Program Coordinator.  Meghan is responsible for supporting all of our Connecticut programs outside Fairfield County. As you may recall, Kerry McMahon supports all our Fairfield County programs.

Meghan comes to us with much knowledge of early education.  She is a former elementary school teacher, predominantly teaching kindergarten in Madison, and a former Head Start teacher from the Head Start program in Middletown.  Meghan resides in  Madison with her husband and two children.

The work of our program coordinators is vitally important to the success of the Reach Out and Read Connecticut region.  Our program coordinators travel around the state to conduct on-site quality assurance visits to each of our 71 programs.  They work with each of our programs individually to ensure they are delivering the best Reach Out and Read program possible, in accordance with our proven, evidence-based model.   The program coordinators truly "take care" of our programs: they organize training, help them troubleshoot problems, provide  guidance and resources, and, very happily, bring the programs books!  Thank you for all that you do!

Please join me in welcoming Meghan to the Connecticut team!

Kind regards,

Chris

ONCE UPON A TIME....

Reach Out and Read Connecticut
Video for Reach Out and Read Connecticut
created by Buzz Media

On April 5, Reach Out and Read Connecticut's ONCE UPON A TIME fundraiser came to life, with over a hundred supporters celebrating books and the important work that we do to engage parents and prepare low-income children for kindergarten.  Exquisitely decorated food and beverage stations were scattered throughout the first floor of the Blackstone Library in Branford, each one artistically depicting a different children's storybook.  The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland, Winnie the Pooh, Where the Wild Things Are, and Olivia were just a few of the books that came to life that evening.  Talented chefs and caterers completed the stations with delicious food and beverages creatively tied into the book themes.  Cinderella's carriage served as the focal point in the entry way of the foyer, and with walls of books surrounding the beautifully decorated stations, the library was truly transformed into its own fairytale atmosphere.  Click here to see additional photos.

During the evening, awards were presented to some of our medical providers, programs, and partner organizations to celebrate their distinguished work.

Children's Author Tish Rabe Writes New Book  for Reach Out and Read Connecticut

"Love You, Hug You, Read to You" is the latest book by best-selling children's author and Reach Out and Read Connecticut Advisory Board member Tish Rabe. Ms. Rabe has written over 160 books for children, including titles for Sesame Street, Disney, Curious George, Blue's Clues, Clifford, Bear in the Big Blue House and Huff and Puff among many others. She was selected by Dr. Seuss Enterprises to create The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library, a series of non-fiction science books for early readers written in Seussian rhyme. A television series based on these books, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, premiered on PBS Kids in 2010. Her passion for encouraging caregivers to read to their children inspired her to write, "Love You, Hug You, Read to You" for Reach Out and Read Connecticut.

"Love You, Hug You, Read to You" is an interactive board book that was written and designed for Reach Out and Read Connecticut.  The book has a wonderful message and includes questions parents can ask their child(ren) while reading. This dialogic reading engages children and helps build basic language and literacy skills. We are thrilled to have this book as part of our program! To learn more about Tish Rabe and her books, visit her website.

Congresswoman Esty and President Darlene Stromstad, CEO of Waterbury Hospital, Visit Alliance Medical Group

President and CEO, Darlene Stromstad and Congresswoman Esty

On April 23, Reach Out and Read Connecticut had the pleasure of hosting Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-05) and President Darlene Stromstad, CEO of Waterbury Hospital, at our Reach Out and Read program at Alliance Medical Group in Middlebury.  The two women did a fabulous job reading to the young patients of the practice and enjoyed meeting and spending the morning with the children.

"As a mom of three, I know how critical reading aloud to children at an early age is for literacy development and school readiness," said Congresswoman Esty. "Today brought me back to my years as a room parent in my children's classroom. Reach Out and Read is a wonderful program, reaching about 10,000 children in central and northwest Connecticut. I'm proud to support strong federal funding for Reach Out and Read, and I applaud the Alliance Medical Group and the United Way of Greater Waterbury for supporting this invaluable program for families in our community."

Alliance Medical Group became a Reach Out and Read program in 2012, thanks to a generous grant from the United Way of Greater Waterbury

"Reach Out and Read is an invaluable program for encouraging early literacy skills and promoting bonding opportunities for parents and their children" said Dr. Linda Mathew of Alliance Medical Group.  "Our families at Alliance Medical Group are enthusiastic about reading their new books with their children and excited about creating the first library of books in their home. I am very thankful to the United Way of Greater Waterbury for supporting us in this program."   The United Way of Greater Waterbury continues to bring Reach Out and Read to greater Waterbury practices and provides book support to those programs.  We are so grateful for their wonderful partnership.

We thank Congresswoman Esty and President Stromstad for taking the time to visit and support Reach Out and Read at Alliance Medical Group.

US News & World Report: Early Childhood Poverty Damages Brain Development, Study Finds

According to new research from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, there appears to be a relation between smaller brain volumes and poverty. Researchers, led by Joan Luby, analyzed the brain scans of 145 children between the ages of 6 and 12. According to US News and World Report, the researchers found that poverty appears to alter the physical makeup of a child's brain; those children who were exposed to poverty at an early age had smaller volumes of white and cortical gray matter.

Charles Nelson of the Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School wrote an editorial on the study, arguing that although some of the data from the study may be skewed by other influences, the findings support the idea that intervention strategies targeting high-risk families should start as early as birth. Given the high number of children living in poverty, it is more important than ever to get caregivers involved in early intervention and support.
