Dear Reach Out and Read Colleagues,
I hope that many of you will be able to join us at our next collaborative conference, Fostering Lifelong Learners, this one presented with The Horn Book; publishers, literary critics, authors, educators and our Reach Out and Read doctors will share their perspectives on what makes the very best children's literature, and how that intersects with what our youngest children need the most.
I am writing this in the lobby of the Federal Reserve Building, at a different sort of conference, the Massachusetts AAP's second Early Childhood Summit. Hearing speakers from the highest level of economic policy, brain research, and politics (Governor Patrick was a warmly-welcomed guest) is inspiring, and I welcome the opportunity to hear that these "thought leaders" recognize the importance of the earliest years of child development.
But what is truly invigorating for me, and for the other Regional Coordinators around the state, is visiting the clinics and practices where this awareness plays itself out every day. Whether in parking-lot conversations over an exchange of books, or anecdotes shared at a staff meeting, or even the simple process of facilitating a Scholastic book order, the enthusiasm, attention and commitment with which you all implement your programs keeps our work feeling fresh and new.
With Warm Wishes for a Warm Spring,
Alison Corning Clarke,MA, MSW
Massachusetts Programs Director

Target Grants
Target Store Grants are a great opportunity for Reach Out and Read sites to raise ad ditional funds for books; many Massachusetts sites have applied successfully in the past. It's important to note that many sites that did not initially receive an award received funding until the second or third year of application, so if you were unlucky last year, keep trying!
The 2013 Target Store grant application is available HERE through April 30 at noon central time. Also available is an application template to guide you through the process. The application is very straightforward, and should take no more than one hour to complete. Sites that are not non-profit (501-c3) may applying using Reach Out and Read's National Tax ID number; for details please check with your Regional Coordinator.
