Building Homes, Building Lives
August 2013
August 3 Home Clinic: Flooring
Choosing flooring for a Hawaii home can be a bit more challenging than on the mainland, since humidity, mold and mud are everywhere.  Learn about options, pros and cons, and value for your money, as well as ease of installation.

Check out your options, walk on some samples, and bring your questions!  Join us on Saturday, August 3, from 10-11 a.m. at the ReStore.  Presented by Allen Goodsen and Paul Mendoza, from Paul's Enterprises, which sells floor & window coverings.   The event is free and no reservations are required.
Painting, Plumbing & Electrical on Aug. 3, 10, 17

Volunteers continue to make progress on our Hawaiian Beaches Renovation Home.  On Saturday, August 3, 10 and 17, we'll be working on the property from 8-12 noon.  Come help us build front steps, continue painting, and take care of some plumbing and electrical.  Lunch will be provided.  If you have your own tools or some to share, feel free to bring them.  Sign up online to volunteer on our construction calendar at www.hilohabitat.org.
Happening Now: The House That Groceries Built
KTA Logo During the month of August at all KTA locations, shoppers can support more affordable housing as they pay for their regular items.  At each cash register, there will be colorful bright green tags available in denominations of $1 and $5.  Shoppers can simply inform the cashier of the amount they would like to donate.
Donations can be made at any KTA store island-wide.  All proceeds will be divided evenly between both East and West Hawaii Habitat for Humanity organizations.  This is the 4th year of the KTA-Habitat for Humanity partnership.

"Our cash register donation tags are an easy and convenient way to donate, and that's why we support the community like this," said Pearl Daimaru, KTA representative.  "This month, we're pleased to partner with Habitat for Humanity, which builds affordable homes and operates a discount home improvement ReStore, to keep homes in good working order and prevent homelessness."

"We are extremely grateful for this partnership with KTA and the public.  Building homes builds lives--and that strengthens our community economically and socially," said Julie Hugo, president of Hilo Habitat for Humanity and Realtor with Aiona Island Realty.  "Every gift is appreciated. We're excited about using the money to finish our Hawaiian Beaches renovation home and start  our next house."

To donate through the August KTA fundraiser, choose a tag at the cash register as you check out.
Expo/Walk at Prince Kuhio Plaza Builds Homes

Are you looking for something fun, healthy, easy and low-cost to do with family and friends?  Put this date on your calendar: Saturday, September 21, starting any time from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Visit Prince Kuhio Mall and enjoy the Building Community Expo & Walk.

Hilo Habitat for Humanity, the Hawaii Island REALTORS and General Growth Properties have teamed up to create a Super Saturday home ownership expo and "funDraiser," to support Hilo Habitat for Humanity's affordable homebuilding program.

Unlike many other walks, the Building Community Expo & Walk will not require sponsorships or laps, nor do walkers need to start at a specified time. Instead, walkers will pay a flat $10 registration fee. If they talk with home specialists such as home inspectors, insurance providers, alternative energy providers, and others, they can win prizes of various values, based on how many rubber stamps they collect on their registration cards from the home specialists.

Walkers may also walk at their own pace, with convenient and flexible start times between 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. The walk will end at 1:30 p.m. with the drawings held by 2 p.m. The cards are turned in whenever each walker finishes talking to the number of home specialists that interest them and collect rubber stamps. There will be three categories of drawing prizes, based on the number of rubber stamps. While there are an estimated 50 home specialists, only some of those will provide rubber stamps. Drawing winners need not be present to win.

Walkers may register online at www.hilohabitat.org starting August 5 or may register with cash on the day of the event. Approximately 500 walkers are expected to participate, raising approximately $5,000. Tshirts will also be available for sale on the day of the event.

Anna Rainie
Anna Rainie:

Volunteer of the Month

This month, we'd like to welcome back Anna Rainie, who recently painted at the Hawaiian Beaches renovation home after a long hiatus due to a back injury.  A few years ago, Anna also volunteered on our homes in Keaukaha and Ainaloa.  In addition, she is friends with some of our first partner families.

Anna volunteers for construction and also prepares food for Hilo Habitat's construction events.  She loves to bring friends and socialize while she works.

"I feel good doing the work and also learn things while I do it.  I love working with my hands and not my head," Anna said, with a smile and a laugh.

Hilo Habitat for Humanity sure appreciates We sure Anna's hands and heart and are glad to have her back.
