Teens with Upbeat Friends May Have Better Emotional Health
Pediatricians and child behavior specialists who work with teens know that adolescence is an incredibly important time for social growth. Yet these years can be fraught with anxiety for the parents of teens. How to know if a moody teen is hanging out with the right people...which friends might be a bad influence...how to help teens develop healthy relationships. Recent research has addressed some aspects of these concerns. One study entitled "Spreading of healthy mood in adolescent social networks," published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, investigated whether a teen whose friends have a healthy mood is less likely to be depressed.  Read more at http://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/teens-with-upbeat-friends-may-have-better-emotional-health-201512108797.

New Children's Safety Network Infographic on Bullying and Fighting
In 2013, US high school students took the CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey. "How Common Are Bullying and Fighting among High Schoolers?" outlines some of the findings related to bullying and fighting. Twenty percent of high schoolers were bullied on school property. One in five high schoolers were in a physical fight. Kids who experience bullying are more likely to miss school due to feeling unsafe.  See the infographic at http://www.childrenssafetynetwork.org/infographics/bullying-YRBS.

Why High School Students Don't Intervene To Stop Dating Violence
The overwhelmingly majority of teens witness dating aggression or sexual violence among their peers, but many choose not to intervene - sometimes because they want to avoid drama, sometimes because they want to fuel drama, and sometimes because they're afraid of second-guessing a more popular kid. Those are among new findings from researchers at the University of New Hampshire's Carsey School of Public Policy, who conducted a study that offers an unusual glimpse of bystander intervention among high school teenagers. Read the news story at https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/education/wp/2015/12/01/why-high-school-students-dont-intervene-to-stop-dating-violence/.  Access the brief at https://carsey.unh.edu/publications/dating-and-sexual-aggression

Survey Shows Teens' Fascination with E-Cigarettes
Forty percent of US students said they use e-cigarettes because they taste good, while 1 in 10 used them to quit smoking, according to a survey conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan and sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Researchers surveyed 44,892 students in eighth, 10th and 12th grades at 382 schools. They found 9 percent of eighth-graders, 16 percent of 10th-graders and 17 percent of 12-graders reported using e-cigarettes in the previous month, compared with 4 percent, 7 percent and 14 percent, respectively, who said they had smoked a tobacco cigarette.
