The human bone is actually a "living tissue", not just some lifeless dead mass as we picture in a skeleton. In the human body, there is a constant process of breaking down and rebuilding bone cells. When the rate of bone breakdown exceeds that of bone manufacture, it can result in a condition known as osteoporosis - meaning "porous bone."
In the United States today, more than 40 million people either already have osteoporosis or are at high risk due to low bone mass. Osteoporosis can strike at any age, although the risk for developing the disease increases as you get older. In the future, more people will be at risk for developing osteoporosis because people are living longer and the number of elderly people in the population is increasing.
|
50% of women over the age of 50. 1 in 2 American women will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. 25% of men over the age of 50. Up to one-third of all hip fractures occur in men.
|
Developing osteoporosis is more of a risk for teens and those in their 20s, 30s, and 40s than it was in past generations. High consumption of phosphorus-laden soft drinks, which leach calcium from bones, is partially to blame. The U.S. ranks first among countries in soft drink consumption. Ninety percent of bone mass is built during childhood. Peak bone mass is usually reached during a person's mid-20s. Typically from that point on, bone loss outpaces formation. How dense the bones are prior to menopause is a significant factor in determining whether or not a woman develops osteoporosis. That being the case, building strong bone should be a lifelong goal beginning in childhood.

Although there has recently been an incredible push for increasing dietary calcium intake to prevent osteoporosis, the condition represents much more than a lack of calcium. It is a complex condition involving hormonal, lifestyle, and nutritional factors.
Certain lifestyle factors are extremely important to bone health. For example: coffee, alcohol, and smoking can cause a negative calcium balance, (more calcium being lost than taken in.) Phosphorus-laden soft drinks leach calcium from the bones. These and other poor dietary choices are major factors that contribute to osteoporosis.
On the other hand, physical exercise, consisting of one hour of moderate activity three times a week has not only been shown to prevent bone loss, but actually increases bone mass in post-menopausal women. Weight bearing and resistance activities are the best, such as walking, jogging, dancing and weight-lifting.

Bone health starts with good nutrition. Bone is dependent on a constant supply of many nutrients. A deficiency of any number of nutrients, such as boron, magnesium, vitamins D or K will adversely affect bone health. While diets high in green leafy vegetables, nuts, and legumes are ideal. Most people don't consume sufficient amounts.
Contrary to popular belief, Milk consumption may not lead to strong bones. One of the first clues that milk alone may not be enough for your bone health is data showing that countries with the highest dairy intake have the highest rate of hip fractures per capita.
