The early stages of your child's brain development are a very critical part of their lives. During those early years, your child develops all the sensory functions, such as speech (their first words), sight, hearing, smell, and touch. At the age of three years, a child's brain is two times more active than an adults.
A big factor in your child's brain development is the level of DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid). DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is a primary structural component of the human brain cerebral cortex. Not only is DHA the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in the brain, it is also the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in the retina of the eyes. The levels of DHA also play a big role in the development of your child's sight.
Making sure your children get enough DHA could help improve their behavior according to recent research, (www.pubmed.com/22071708). Researchers found that children with higher levels of DHA were less likely to have behavioral problems. Necessary for neurological development, DHA is thought to enhance brain function in children. Some research indicates that increasing children's intake of DHA may even help treat ADHD (attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder).
DHA is also a normal component of breast milk, and infants fed breast milk score higher on intellectual and visual measurements than those fed baby formulas lacking DHA. Children who were breast-fed, as a group, have higher IQ scores than those who were formula fed.
Once your child is off breast milk, it is recommended that parents add a small amount of DHA (50 to 150 mg) to their daily nutrition. Even if you don't do it every day, it still ensures that no child will suffer the consequences of DHA deficiency during these crucial years of brain development. When our children don't consume the right mix of brain boosting nutrients, they have a reduced ability to learn and a lower IQ. Later in life they can develop dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
On the other hand, the right mixture of brain-supporting foods will afford your children the ability to reach their maximum potential in life, not just for health, but for emotional stability, and success in their lives.
Deficiency in DHA fatty acids has been linked to:
- Impulsiveness
- Aggressiveness
- Dyslexia
- Depression
- Reduced intelligence
- Sleep problems
- Temper tantrums
- Alcoholism
- Schizophrenia
- Manic depression
Research has shown that today's children are only receiving 20-30 mg of DHA per day, far below the recommended daily intake.
The natural sources of DHA for children are:
- Organ meats
- Breast milk
- Algae
- Seafood, especially oily, cold-water fish such as salmon, herring, sardines, and anchovies
And let's fact it, of the four sources listed above, the most common source for children is seafood, which should be limited due to mercury contamination. The recommended weekly intake of canned fish for children under six years of age is 3 ounces or 1 oz per 20 pounds of body weight.
