WELCOME TO MADERA COUNTY . . . California's Gateway to Yosemite
October in Madera County goes to the dogs . . .

Many of us travel with our best furry friends and discover, too late, that there can be restrictions when you want to take them into national parks. If you plan ahead, you'll find that there's plenty to do both inside Yosemite National Park and in its gateway communities for you and Fido.

In this newsletter we've given you a short list of what's available that you and your canine companion can enjoy together as well as details on the many fall and Halloween-themed activities taking place during October. There's something for everyone!

Enjoy Yosemite and California's Gateway
with Your Dog

Who says you can't hike with Rover in Yosemite? Of course you can! Yes, there are restrictions, but by planning ahead, you can make the most of your time with your favorite hiking companion. The one dirt trail where Rover is welcome (mostly dirt, anyway--at one time it was partly paved) is the Wawona Meadow Loop, located about 20 minutes north of the Yosemite south entrance. This is an easy 3.5 mile jaunt that starts across from the historic Wawona Hotel and winds around the golf course to end up at the back side of the hotel. The trail is lovely any time of year but especially lovely in spring when wildflowers are out.

In Yosemite Valley, you can do a complete walking tour of the Valley floor by sticking to the 12 miles of paved bike trails. You and Fido can exercise both your legs and your eyes with the magnificent views before you. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed off the pavement on other trails, nor are they allowed in Mariposa Grove, on shuttle buses or in stores or hotels. Take a picnic, stroll and enjoy!

Sierra National Forest is supremely dog-friendly. Explore the many miles of forest trails to your heart's content with Rover at your side. Go for a one-mile walk or a 14-mile backpack adventure--your choice.

After you're done exploring and hiking, head to Reimer's Candies for human ice cream and canine treats.  (Ask if the ice cream is safe for Fido, too.) If you'd prefer,
Mosey on over to Oakhurst Feed & Pet Supply, where doggie ice cream is always available, along with  any other supplies that your traveling buddy needs.

Many local restaurants with patio dining welcome your doggie companion, including Crab Cakes.  Enjoy a glass of wine on the outdoor patio of the Queens Inn Wine Bar & Beer Garden. In season, relax on the patios of The Forks Resort and Miller's Landing at Bass Lake.

Your pet can ride on the
A pooch and his pal at Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad
Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad -- and you can come, too, if you're well-behaved. Their lovely, shaded patio area outside  the bookstore is a relaxing place for both of you to enjoy a sandwich or a cold drink.

If your furry friend prefers to sit out the hike and let you go it alone, Yosemite National Park offers kennel service in Yosemite Valley at the Curry Village stables from Memorial Day through Labor Day. In Oakhurst, All Kritter Sitters can provide the kind of pampering your dog craves so that you can trek those trails where he's not allowed.

If you want information on pet-friendly hotels and dining establishments (patios only, of course), as well as businesses who cater to furry friends or can care for your dog while you explore Yosemite, contact Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau at (559)683-4636 or  www.yosemitethisyear.com.
Last Few Weeks for Mariposa Grove Tram

A few weeks remain to ride the tram from Mariposa Grove's lower regions to the upper grove and the Mariposa Grove Museum, on the site of Galen Clark's cabin. When the tram ends in early November, it disappears forever as Yosemite embarks on a major restoration of the area to preserve and protect these giant treasures.

If you're not a hiker, this could represent a last chance to easily reach some of most beautiful portions of this magnificent stand of Giant Sequoias. Adult fare is $26.50, with lower prices available for children and seniors. The narrated tour lasts approximately 1-1/4 hours. For more information about the planned restoration, please visit  Mariposa Grove Restoration.
4th Annual Pomegranate Festival

In Madera, the heart of Pomegranate Country, preparations are well underway for the fourth  annual Madera Pomegranate Festival, which takes place Saturday, November 1, 2014, at Madera Municipal Airport. The event is organized by the Madera Tourism Alliance, a committee of the Madera Chamber of Commerce.

"On behalf of the Madera Chamber, I would like to invite everyone to come out and join us for this fun-filled event," Eugene Bell, Chairman of the Board of Directors, stated. "The Tourism Alliance Committee and Chamber staff are working hard to bring another great event to our community thisMadera Pomegranate Celebration year."

A favorite part of the lineup according to event producers is the Pomegranate Grenade Launch. Dreamed up by the committee and brothers Brian and Nick Davis of Twin Pomegranates Winery, the Pomegranate Grenade Launch is a massive slingshot that launches pomegranates at a target some distance away.

Organizers say Madera Municipal Airport provides ample space for vendors and displays. That, along with plenty of parking for attendees, make the airport an ideal location for this annual event. "The available space and the City's help in making the event happen really creates the perfect environment for the Pomegranate Festival," Debi Bray, president and CEO of the Madera Chamber of Commerce says.

Returning to this year's lineup is a display of various aircraft as well as skydivers from Madera Parachute Center. New  this year is a children's stage featuring local dance, karate and other talents from our young Maderans, a Jelly Belly attraction with samples and games and a Fossil Dig hosted by the Fossil Discovery Center of Madera County. Other attractions include a presentation from the Fresno Chaffee Zoomobile, art classes from the Madera County Arts Council, kids' games from the Madera Parks Department, numerous cooking demos from local chefs, live music by the Marie Wilson Band, plus everything pomegranate.

"We'll have vendors selling the fruit itself, plus pomegranate trees, pomegranate-scented candles, jellies and anything else you could think of involving pomegranate, and probably some things you didn't know could incorporate the fruit," Bray mentions.

To learn more about the Pomegranate Festival, please call the Madera Chamber of Commerce at (559)673-3563.

Oakhurst Gears Up for 22nd Annual Fall Festival

Oakhurst Community Park will be filled with scores of booths offering everything from collectibles to local wine samplings and more at the 22nd annual Oakhurst Fall Festival taking place October 11 and 12.

In its early days, it was known as the Oakhurst Chocolate and Wine Festival. Over the years it has grown to encompass so much more than those two essential ingredients.

"The Fall Festival showcases everything our community and our region has to offer for visitors and locals alike," Darin Soukup, Executive Director of the Oakhurst Area of Chamber of Commerce, said. "We put together a truly diverse array of offerings so everyone has something to be excited about. Visitors are able to sample wines from regional wineries as well as offerings from numerous chocolatiers," said Soukup, Executive Director of the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce, the event organizer. "The Oakhurst Fall Festival has much more to offer, as well, with artisanal cheeses, nuts and beers from regional microbreweries, numerous collectibles, a silent auction, live music and car shows on Saturday and Sunday." In addition, local restaurants have been invited to provide a wide variety of menu options.

A family-friendly venue, kids' activities are provided by the Children's Museum of the Sierra, including a petting zoo, face painting and miniature horse rides.

The Oakhurst Fall Festival runs from 10 am to 4 pm both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $2. Tickets for beer, wine, cheese, nut and chocolate-tasting as well as kids' events and other activities cost $1 a piece. To learn more, contact the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce at 559-683-7766 or visit  www.OakhurstChamber.com/oakhurstfallfestival and www.facebook.com/oakhurstfallfestival. The Oakhurst Community Park is located off Civic Circle Drive in Oakhurst, behind the Oakhurst Branch Library.

Coarsegold Tarantula Festival

Each year the Sierra foothill community of Coarsegold hosts an event unique to the Sierra Nevada Tarantula Festival foothills. Saturday, October 25, heralds the return of the Coarsegold Tarantula Festival for the 17th year.

The small town celebrates the emergence of the eight-legged creatures as they come out of their burrows in search of a mate, before they hunker down over the winter. In the foothills, tarantula sightings forecast both cooler temperatures and the approaching rainy season, something central valley and foothill communities welcome.

"I've had hundreds of people who say they spared the life of a tarantula because of the festival. People report they now gently move them from places they're not wanted, instead of resorting to a shoe or bug spray," said Diane Boland, creator of the event.

Boland actually started the event when she was new to Coarsegold herself. She accidentally ran over a tarantula and was admonished by her neighbor. That inspired her to ensure others didn't make similar mistakes.

"I wanted to make people aware of how interesting tarantulas are, how they really are good for the environment, unique to the mountains and really a lot of fun," she said.

The event features numerous activities including the popular tarantula races, hairiest leg contests for both men and women, as well as costume contests, baking contests and art activities for kids. There are also various vendors and the chance for kids to learn about tarantulas from experts, and even hold one.

The festival starts at 10:30 with the final tarantula race starting at 5 pm. For photos or to learn more, visit www.coarsegoldhistoricvillage.com. See also the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau calendar

Vietnam Moving Wall

From October 16 through October 20, Madera County has the opportunity to honor  veterans who fought and died for our country during the Vietnam War, when the Vietnam Moving Wall comes to Madera's Courthouse Park, escorted by American Legion Riders.

The Moving Wall arrives in California's central valley thanks to the efforts of Madera County Supervisor Rick Farinelli and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1981.

The Vietnam Moving Wall began as a joint project of volunteers John Devitt, Gerry Haver and others, who felt the positive power of the Washington, DC, monument. They vowed to build two replicas to share with the rest of the country, so those unable to travel to the main Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, DC would be able to view the names of loved ones listed there. On display for the first time in Tyler, Texas, in October, 1984, the two versions of the Moving Wall now journey throughout the United States from April through November, spending about a week at each location.

"This wall means a lot to our county and the veterans who live here,"  says Supervisor Farinelli.   "It gives us a chance to honor and reflect on the soldiers who died during the Vietnam War. This moving memorial will be particularly special - it is coming here on the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, and it will also be the 30th anniversary of this wall, the first of the moving walls. It's been exciting to see all the local organizations that have come together from around the region to make this event a success. I am honored that my home can host such an important memorial, and I really hope that everyone in Madera and San Joaquin Valley can take the time to see it."

The wall will be available for public viewing 24 hours per day during its visit to Madera Courthouse Park.

For additional information about the Wall's visit to Madera County, contact Robert Jeffers, Legislative Assistant to Supervisor Rick Farinelli at 559/662-6030 or email him at [email protected] .

Sierra Art Trails - Annual Open Studio Tour

The Central Sierra Nevada has always attracted artists. Poets, writers, painters and photographers have been drawn to the majestic landscapes and natural wonders of the region for nearly 200 years.  Twelve years ago local artists realized the need to celebrate the treasure that is the wealth of art in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Thus began the Sierra Art Trails - Annual Open Studio Tour.

The Annual Open Studio Tour provides the opportunity for art lovers to meet artists in person, visit studios, ask questions, view demonstrations, and see the creative process at work. You may enter a studio and find a watercolorist demonstrating a technique, watch a woodworker turning a bowl, or see a ceramic artist working with clay. The show also offers a unique opportunity to purchase original fine arts and crafts directly from the people who create them.

The Sierra Art Trails 2014 catalog is now available at a cost of $18, and your catalog is your "Ticket for Two" for Sierra Art Trails, the largest and most anticipated art event in the area.  The show takes place Friday through Sunday, October 3 through 5, from 10 AM to 6 PM at each venue.  The catalog provides details on attending the show, a list of participating artists, examples of their work, and detailed maps to get you there.

Our 2014 Catalog Cover Artist is Ginny Burdick - Visit www.sierraarttrails.org/catalog_cover
