Featured speakers (From left, above) Dr. Thomas Rogers, formerly Nassau and Western Suffolk BOCES, current incoming Superintendent of Syosset Central School District and John Cameron, LI Regional Planning Council have worked hard with a diverse cross section of stakeholders, including the teachers union and School Board officials to figure that out.

Dana Friedman, Founder and President of the Early Years Institute has a lot of evidence-based things to say about the critical importance of age-appropriate preschool. James McGowan of Adelphi, (pictured above with Ken Christensen, President's Council Co-Chair of Leadership Huntington) was an excellent moderator. The discussion was important and informative!

Class of 2014 Considers: Where do We Grow From Here?

The Class of 2014 spent a very full day considering Community and Economic Development in the Town of Huntington. They started off at the Huntington Business Incubator, where Tawaun Weber of Vision Long Island discussed the organization's primary focus on inclusive planning and development processes that are economically, environmentally and socially responsible.

Tawaun shared how Vision Long Island operates from facilitating the grass roots and diverse interests so they may find their common ground, to helping the highest levels of government identify how they can effectively help. She and Trudy also offered insight into how the organization itself developed and functions, and how it determines whether to get involved in a project or community. They discussed various projects across Long Island, the work of the highly diverse LI Lobby Coalition, and Vision's deep involvement in helping communities across the South Shore of Long Island recover from Hurricane Sandy.

The Class then spent time with Ryan Porter of Renaissance Downtowns. They discussed the company's collaborative business model, and how it's being applied to efforts to revitalize Huntington Station, particularly the crowd-sourcing planning process being executed by Source the Station. Spe
cific challenges were considered, as were initial plans and opportunities.

After lunch, the class moved to LaunchPad Huntington, where they spoke with Mark Lesko of Accelerate Long Island. They discussed the organization's work collaborating with
Long Island's world class research institutions and its business community to commercialize research and create an entrepreneurial ecosystem. Mark offered insight into the LaunchPad model as well as how venture capitalism works. He also shared specific models and opportunities that he sees in Huntington.

We then got to meet Tyler Roye, the entrepreneur behind E-Gifter, which is the anchor business operating out of the LaunchPad. We will be back to check out some of their upcoming networking events. It's interesting stuff!

The class then got down to business of their own. What are they working on? Only time will tell...!
