Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs
Texas Bootstrap Loan Program: After a series of Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) workshops to prepare organizations for the funding release on November 1st, affiliates had to be ready to go as soon as the process opened. All funds for the year were allocated within an hour and a half. This is evidence of the great need and popularity of the program.
Many thanks to Raul Gonzales and Homero Cabello with TDHCA for conducting the workshops and helping affiliates get ready.
Will Gudeman, also with TDHCA, conducted workshops on proposed minimum energy efficiency standards for single family construction in October. Many, if not most, Habitat affiliates are already meeting the standards.

MLK Day 2014
|

MLK Day 2014 will take place on January 20, 2014.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"
Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities.
It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.
Their website has lots of tools and resources to make this a community event, so check it out. You can also register your Day of Service Project now by clicking here.

World Habitat Day Recap
Come together in prayer
|
With more than 150 congregations participating, World Habitat Day (WHD) in Texas was a success worth building upon.
Our "What Home Means to Me" campaign with videos of friends and colleagues relating what home is to them drew our largest social media response ever. Of course, there were challenges for this campaign which should mostly be alleviated by starting the campaign a bit earlier in the year, so affiliates have time to prepare. We've reported that to Habitat International and hope next year's World Habitat Day will be have more impact.
Many thanks to our intern, Rick Carlson, for his efforts.

Notice of Funding Opportunities

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has two grants through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) that may apply to Neighborhood Revitalization Initiatives, developing a community owned facility in a Habitat neighborhood, or ReStore development (depending on if the ReStore plans to offer employment to marginalized workers).
Community Development Grant Program
CCHD Community development grant amounts range between $25,000 and $75,000. Community Development grants support efforts that demonstrate a commitment to the dignity of the human person. CCHD-funded groups are led by people living in poverty and work to address the root causes of poverty by nurturing solidarity between the poor and non-poor and facilitating the participation of people living in poverty in decisions that perpetuate poverty in their lives. As part of such efforts, low-income people gain the ability to identify barriers, brainstorm solutions, and take action to change problematic structures and systems in their communities.
Economic Development Grant Program
CCHD Economic Development grant amounts range between $25,000 and $75,000. CCHD supports economic development initiatives that significantly include the voice of the poor and marginalized in developing new businesses that offer good jobs and/or develop assets that will be owned and enjoyed by local communities.
Hillcrest Foundation
The Hillcrest Foundation provides grants to charitable organizations for the advancement of education, the promotion of health, and the relief of poverty. Grant requests for capital and program support are strongly encouraged. General operating support requests will not be considered. The majority of grants are one year in duration. On occasion, multi-year support is awarded. Approximately 90% of grant funds are paid to organizations in North Texas, with emphasis on charitable services in the Dallas area. Grant amounts range from $10,000 to $300,000 (multi-year payment) with an average grant of $35,000. Grants to meet challenges or matching funds have a special appeal. The Hillcrest Foundation has three deadlines annually: November 30th, February 28th and July 31st.
Guidelines and other details are available on the Foundation's website. Select "Hillcrest Foundation" from the pull-down menu.
Topfer Family Foundation
The Topfer Family Foundation funds programs and organizations in the greater Austin area that connect people to the tools and resources they need to build self-sufficient and fulfilling lives. Through their Aging in Place Program, the Foundation partners with local organizations that provide housing options for the elderly while ensuring access to the support services needed to maintain their health and independence. Eligible programs include those that offer home modification, home repair, food and nutrition services, and affordable housing alternatives. The Topfer Family Foundation accepts online applications year round and reviews them on a quarterly basis. Guidelines and other details are available on the Foundation's website.

Lastly, congratulations goes out to David Fisk. David was nominated for the Cabot Creamery Volunteer Award by the Dallas Area Habitat. Affiliate leaders were given the chance to nominate an un-sung hero of their organization and a random drawing was held for the winner.
Thank you to all who nominated. It's easy to see that there are many people making a difference across Texas. Here's what David is doing:
"Twenty years ago, Dave volunteered with Habitat and learned how to install siding. Since then, he has forgotten more about siding than more people could ever know. He leads the Siding Crew, serves on the Training Committee of the Construction Committee, leads the Construction Crew Task Force, spends nearly every Saturday leading volunteers, is a trainer and technical expert for the construction manual and has participated in Habitat builds around the world. He's an invaluable Habitat volunteer!"

As always, let us know how we can serve you. Please call me at 512-523-5725.
