Children in Crisis
In response to the national crisis involving the thousands of immigrant children that have crossed into the US unaccompanied by parents or guardians, St. Anne's is holding a church meeting on Sunday, Aug. 24 following the 10:00 service to discuss the issue and a possible response to it. Bishop Susan Goff recently posted a reflection on the child immigrant crisis which can be read here

Exploratory Meeting to Discuss Holy Land Trip

Please join us on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss a trip/pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the coming year. This trip would be an opportunity to visit the Holy Land as well as a chance to offer much-needed support to Dr. George Ghanem, who is working to build and staff a rehabilitation clinic for Israeli and Palestinian youths.

Backpacks Collection a Success
Thanks so much to everyone who donated a backpack! And thanks to Stephanie Hando and Kimberly Cowell-Myers for organizing this activity. We had a very successful backpack drive. We dropped off dozens of backpacks at Cornerstones yesterday. These backpacks will go toward fulfilling Cornerstones' request for 3,200 to be distributed to needy school children in the Reston/Herndon area.

Lunch for the Soul (St. Anne's Day)

Over the past few months, St. Anne's has continued to provide volunteers on a weekly basis to Trinity Presbyterians' exemplary feeding program that meets on Wednesday mornings to provide lunch to day laborers.

We would like to up the ante and put the challenge out there to provide 100% of the volunteers and food necessary for the program which will feed 50 people on Wednesday, Aug. 27. We will need:

  • Volunteers to shop on Monday or Tuesday;
  • Volunteers to help do some prep on Tuesday August 26th at 7:30 in our kitchen at St. Anne's; and
  • At least 5 people in the kitchen at Trinity Presbyterian on Wednesday morning to finish prep work, and serve food.

This is a great activity for families and no Spanish skills are required!!! Your volunteer-ship includes an amazing lunch on Wednesday, Spanish conversation practice, really fun music and great fellowship. Click here to book your spot or contact Katrina Alexander.

KaBoom! Playground Build Dedicated to Don Flynn

KaBOOM! is building a playground - dedicated to Don Flynn - in Herndon. KaBOOM! is an organization dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all children, particularly those growing up in poverty. Don's family chose this organization as a donations recipient following Don's death earlier this year. Don did a couple KaBOOM builds and always came home raving about how much fun they were. His family is now inviting the St. Anne's family to participate in this remarkable build experience by helping to build a playground at Hopkins House, a new non-profit pre-school just off Herndon Parkway (200 Fairbrook Dr.) We need volunteers to help put the entire thing together in one day - Wed., Aug 20 from 8:30 to 2:30. KaBOOM! requires that volunteers be 16 or older. (High school students should be able to use this for service hours.) Please click here to see the invitation. To RSVP, please email Meredith Darche.

Memorial Garden Brick Order

Many of you have enjoyed the beauty of our Memorial Garden and the lovely recognition bricks on our patio. The Vestry of St. Anne's is pleased to offer you the opportunity to purchase an engraved recognition brick(s). We are offering two sizes of bricks: 4"x 8" brick for $150 or 8"x 8" brick for $275. Funds raised from the bricks will be dedicated to finishing the back pathway to the garden and to completing the memorial plaque wall. Click here to see and download the order form. EACH BRICK ORDER WILL REQUIRE A SEPARATE ORDER FORM. If you have any questions, please contact Susan Allen (703-437-6530). The deadline for ordering bricks is Sept. 28. Thank you for your support!

Save the Date... Fall Gleaning Opportunities

Save the date for a day of fresh air, good works, time with family and friends, and APPLE PICKING! We will once again be helping The Society of St. Andrews in their mission to end our country's hunger insecurity. The Society of St. Andrews works with farmers and others to gather, collect,

and distribute produce that would otherwise be thrown away. We need your help to clear some local apple orchards in Winchester, VA! We arrive just before 9 a.m. on a Saturday and work for 2-3 hours. We then have the pleasure of enjoying a gorgeous produce farm that also has picnic tables, orchards for picking (or just walking), and the most fabulous play area for both big and little kids! Contact Amber Gilson for more information. The days we will be picking apples are: Saturday, Sept. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 11.

Jennifer Mitchell Scholarship Reception

St. Anne's will be hosting the Jennifer Mitchell Memorial Scholarship reception on Sunday, Aug. 17 at 1:00 p.m. in the St. Anne's library.  This year the Scholarship Committee, supported by five local religious groups including St. Anne's, awarded nine scholarships to graduating students from Herndon and South Lakes High Schools. The scholarship fund was named in memory of Jennifer Mitchell who was a high school senior when she died in an automobile accident in 1990.  Recipients must have attained a solid record of achievement despite economic, family, linguistic, or other difficulties that would have impeded less dedicated and determined students.

All are welcome to attend the reception and meet the award winners and their family members.  Contact Connie Pettinger for further information.
